Contax / Yashica

My CONTAX III pre-war photos in Berlin 1956

#1
I have found and scanned some negatives taken in Berlin. Germany, when I was there in the British Army, Royal Army Medical Corps in the British Military Hospital Spandau. I went on an 'Organised Tour' by coach, ( In Uniform of course) to the Russian Sector and we had an East German guide so had to be very careful what we photographed -- NO photos of the people living in the ruins for example !! we went to the Russian War Memorial Garden -- it was very overcast and winter I remember -- I had Perutz Peromnia 21/10 DIN film loaded in my Pre-War CONTAX III with the un-coated 50mm f1.5 lens and had the film commercially processed and they over developed the film so it is grainy but I will show you results in the Group Gallery -- please have a look and comment as I never seem to get any comments on my photos on Groups . The guide told us 5000 Russian Soldiers were under the flat part and 2000 under the mound with the Monument and the white carved concrete blocks were taken from Hitler's Bunker.

Good morning, Pete;

Thank you. You brought back quite a few memories.

I see that the format and color of the vehicle registration plate has changed somewhat. The photograph of the Vespa I recognized very quickly as I started to scroll down looking at it. The contrast was obvious between the woman with her bag cart seated on the bench reading her newspaper, and the sign behind the glass pushing the latest "app" for the smart telephones. The Red Filter Test is a demonstration of the effect of the filter. And I was not aware of the problem with the Yashica light meter when looking through a red filter. In fact, I thought that was the virtue of having the light meter sensor behind the filter; it was supposed to automatically compensate for the filter factor. And then there are the photographs from 1956. Memories of such things as the sign "You are now leaving the American Sector." I had heard about the Russian War Memorial Garden, and I saw where it was on the map, but I had not seen any photographs of it. There are quite a few "statements" chiseled into those stone blocks.

I think there is quite a bit there on which to comment. Perhaps later. You did bring back quite a few memories, but I would also have liked to see a little more description associated with some of the photographs, at least about the location. I did recognize St. Thomas' Cathedral in Canterbury, but it was nice to have the confirming description below it. A couple of others look familiar, but I am also dealing with 50 year old memories. And I do have some familiarity with St. Thomas' Hospital in London. Hélène graduated from the RPT School there.

And I also finally did get a Yashica Lynx14 just a few years back, and a Lynx14E also. That Lynx14 was the camera I wanted back then, but I could only afford the Yashica Lynx 1000; my first 35mm camera.

Thanks for the photographs and reviving some nice memories.

Enjoy; Ralph, Latte Land, Washington

Those are some great images! Did you end up with one of the nurses by any chance? I will look through them again later, but I love how many of those images really last.
