While I like my results, I need to learn to expose shadows better.
I find in sketchy lighting situations like this one, it's good to put the palm of your hand in the same light as your scene, take a light meter reading off of it, then open up 1 stop. Poor man's incident metering, and it works with camera meters too, so I don't have to carry anything additional with me. Of course I also have a light metering app on my smart phone, and sometimes I use that instead of the camera meter. I'll do that too if I'm using one of my cameras that doesn't have a built-in meter.
Maybe your metering was 'fooled' by the large amount of White Snow and by shooting into the Sky with that large White area -- I would have used an 'Incident' reading with my Weston Master OR given 1.5 stops MORE exposure on Camera meter.
