Practice makes perfect. Keep practicing "the dance" both without film and with film to see the results. Might even want to get a box of .EDU Ultra (rebranded Fomapan) from Freestyle or B&H to eliminated expired film as part of the problems.

Appreciate the advice! I think part of why this one came out so odd was the lens I was using; looks like the coating was coming off of it. I kinda like the effect, but I've already got a replacement lens and some HP5 to mess around with next time. Feeling a lot more comfortable with developing film.
Coating -- even uneven coating -- won't do this. The marks in the sky are either due to poor storage of the film (probably before you got it) or a development problem. Not to mention a few fingerprints upper left...
