Stump-for Murray :)

An old burned out stump in the midst of an urban forest - the left edge is both shadowed and charred

This was shot on a beautiful sunny day, but the forest canopy...

A ghost from the old growth forest that once was. Every once in a while I'll come across massive burned out stumps in the middle of hemlock groves where the hemlocks are only 3' in diameter, so they can last for many hundreds of years. Was it steaming from the heat of the sun?

The sun was filtered too much by the forest canopy for steam. That which appears to be steam is probably a bit of specular flare. The shadowed side was very dark while the light on the lighted side, although filtered and indirect, still bounced back from the damp and shiny surface with a vengeance.

The original transparency is fairly dark - the scan does a fair job of penetrating the shadows, but loses a bit of the moody atmosphere in the process.

I'm hoping to have time during the coming week to mount and project the slide in my new (to me) MF projector. It should be interesting to compare the results.

Thanks John

Hey, I think my father-in-law was from Surrey. Assuming you are in england.

I like the colors. etheral.

It's been bugging me what this photograph reminded me of. The moist sheen, the browns, oranges, blacks and greens are all characteristic of toads and salamanders on BC's coast. It's cool how I kept coming back to this stump because it hinted at a memory of something completely different, and shows how when we put our work up we never know what other people are going to get out of it - Thanks Matt

mark:

Sorry, but this is Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

The stump is a remnant from the huge forests on the west coast of Canada that existed 200 or so years ago.

I wouldn't be surprised, however, if the city of Surrey, British Columbia was named after the Surrey in England.

Thanks for the comment.

Matt

And thanks again Murray.
