I accidentally added quite a lot of tartaric acid (5g) to my van dyke brown solution so it now gives an okay black-brown shade.
I suck at getting nonstreaky coats on van dyke brown though... I'm wondering if the pastrybrush type Hake from Silverprint is giving me the trouble - maybe too rough? the Dalery-Rowney hake I use for cyanotype is more soft, springy and gentle...
I've had trouble with Hake for a variety of reasons. Winsor Newton Sceptre Gold was recommended to me and does the job beautifully. Not sure about Van Dyke as I use Pt/Pd.
I sort of tried cyanotype with the negative and it doesn't pick up the more delicate tones down the middle because of its compressed tonal scale.
I do like the idea of splitting it down the middle into two images, though. There is more of the left side of the negative, it just didn't all fit onto the coated area. For example you can see bands of rope on the arm in the negative, so this is effectively a cropped image.
I've just seen this, must've missed it first time around. I agree with Stephanie in that I would like to see more of the rope work, it is usually amazing.
Good print apart from the slight darkness, I'm not convinced about the splitting down the middle, although I can see why.
