Point Walter v.2

Point Walter v.2

Thanks to Tom Stanworth for his comments on the pic initially posted. I've upped the contrast in P****shop (am I even allowed to mention this program here? ;)) and dodged around the trees but I'm now worried the dodging looks a bit obvious. My challenge now is to repeat this in the bathroom darkroom. Cheers

top left is a bit burnt to me. trees look fine - nice contrast around them.
the image is a bit grainy though - maybe the scan?
I like the clouds and the composition - it gives the picture a sense of stability.
question: what grade is it? If I had the neg. I would try a 1 or 2 to see how this can make the image "smoother".

Looks like a different image! I feel that this ia a big improvement as you have lost none of the feeling of a front, but now have a sense of light. As far as the comment on burning on the left goes, it could be worth trying to lighten the left side a little, because presumably the front is coming in from the right? See what this looks like, but regardless this image has great atmosphere. The brighter tones are much more in keeping with a beach environment enveloped by a front. I do not think the dodging looks obvious as in stormy weather with dense cloud, the light is often patchy, so much so that it might look like dodging when it is not. My image of Autumn in Snowdonia had the whole left hand mountain which is under shade dodged for 30% of the base exposure as it was so dark (as it was in real life). In my scene the light was so unbeleievable, I thought people would assume major manipulation. The reality was that certain parts of the scene looked like they were under an eclipse. For me images are never finished (obsessive restless type) and I'm sure that with time to mull ideas over and more experience, you will keep coming back to this image as it has so much flexibility in what you could do. I come back to images regularly as I grow in experience (2 years traditionally printing B&W so far and occassional causal dabbliing in Photo*#@p) and sometimes I improve them and on others I realise I had it right the first time. Keep posting them!

Oh yeah! Now that's cool! I think you will have no problem duplicating this in the darkroom! It's beautiful!
