Earl Owens throttles up as he drives one of the last steam Pacifics into the yard at Norton Va. circa 1957. The boss told me to get the shot as there might not be another chance. It was getting dark and very cold.
Thank you for posting, an excellent image of sad time, the passing of the big steamers
opened the way for the Diesel's which in their own way are interesting, but they will never have the charm of even the smalest steam powered locomotive. The strong dark tones seem to enforce what we already know, that the end is near. I have many negatives of last runs, and certainly do like and appreciate this one.
John: I had the opportunity to meet O. Winston Link during one of his operations in the Roanoke area. He was a very accommodating individual. I have all three LPs he recorded during this era and listen to them regularly.
when I saw this in the Thumb nail I thought it was another Chas Webb shot. Nice shot Dr. Bob the electricle pole on the left looks like it is leaning aways so as to not be sucked into the wake of the passing steamer. Great shot!
