Certainly the trees in the shade did not get the same light as the face of El Cap, in bright afternoon sun. This will print well with variable contrast paper using split filtering. This is mentioned in detail in the forums. You will need to burn in the distant cliffs while dodging the right side. No scan of the negative will ever give you the look you want, as considerable manipulation is in order.
