Before the Midway area of St. Paul was cleaned up in 1978, this coke plant dominated the area. Coke is partially-oxidized coal, used as a fuel in steel production. Photo June, 1977.
Great
I'm glad someone took the time to photograph the industrial heritage of our towns and cities.
In 50 years time no one will be here that remembers places like this.
Martin
beautiful image, however I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 50/60's and the smell ( sulfurous) from the coke ovens could be overwhelming in certain parts of town. They are all gone now, only a few remnants of the mills left to remind people what was there.....
BTW a beautiful kallitype, just starting with some Van Dykes -and hope I can ultimately make kallitype as nice as this.
Ahh the good 'ole days when we could pour, dump and pump out anything into the environment and it magically just went away without any repercussion to our livelihood whatsoever!
