This is a completely untouched photo. Straight from scanned Kodachrome slide.
Some of you remember Highway Number 1-from Maine to Miami. If you traveled that route for any distance, you would see friendly mom and Pop Motels. This image of a pink building was one of the last "surviving" group of 12 old time motels-called cottages for travelers.
It is gone with all others now. A reminder of times gone by.
These are the kinds of photos that I really like. They record what has gone by the wayside so that others can see it someday. What's also very important is the narrative that accompanies the photo. The photo and the narrative together make the history/remembrance complete. I hope you post more of these short stories. Cheers.
I've been trying to photograph some places along Route 66 in Albuquerque before the mayor tears them all done. Most have falled to drugs and prostitution and after a certain number of visits by police, the city can close and rip them down.
There are still old highways and back roads (that were once main roads) with these great places if you know where to look. I love some of the names and like to imagine a young couple sitting at a kitchen table in the 1930s or 40s trying to name their new enterprise. One of my favorites: The Fair Motel. What were they thinking? Let's see, "it's not going to be a poor motel" "not an excellent motel" so we'll name it a "Fair motel!
thanks for posting chuck - -
