Rio Grande River - Big Bend Ranch State Park

I spent some time out in west Texas a few weeks ago. Purely to photograph around the Big Bend area with my 12x20.

Printed a whole slew of negative this weekend. Got around to scanning in a few this morning.

This is of the Rio Grande River, taken on the steepest grade of road in the state of texas (believe its an 18% grade). Nice afternoon light begged to be photographed, I'm not usually of the "landscape photography" ilk. But shooting this seemed a necessity.

Taken with a "loaned to me by photomc" 450mm f12.5 Fuji C lens.

That's wonderful. I bet you can just get lost in the print detail. Great feeling of light and distance.
 
I love 12x20! It allows the photographer to take full advantage of humans' ocular physiology. The composition is strong and loose. Too many photographers, especially those of us shooting LF and ULF, fail to move to the next level, because it takes a certain audacity and confidence compose strong photos loosely. By this Im not suggesting that your work has just ascended from the ranks of amateurism, but that your photo illustrates how well you know your audience and ability.

The texture of this strikes me first, and most of all. I just want to touch it and feel the texture - which seems to go on forever. Can't wait to see the others.

Very nice landscape, Matt! I think the format lends itself to this type of photography. The quality of light is really nice, and I enjoy letting my eyes explore from the bottom right of the frame, via the rocks to the river and out towards the top left of the frame. There's a really nice flow and rhythm to that gesture which almost forms a horizontally 'flipped' question mark. Harmonious.

What a great sense of place and a helluva view.
I'm leaving Sunday to spend the whole week in the interior of Big Bend Ranch State Park. I'm taking my son along so photography will be down on the list. Thanks for the teaser!!!!
