It is very different. Fortunately .
The current film CHS 100 II ( I had the possibility to test it) is much, much better in every aspect:
- finer grain
- much better sharpness
- much higher resolution
- much better anti-halation undercoat
- much better tonality because of an optimal characteristic curve.
The spectral sensivity is similar.

Henning, do you have a characteristic curve that you can share? The data sheet for the film mentions a "distinct shoulder" but does not show the curve.

Oren, the former Efke = CHS Art films have had the tendency in several developers to produce "durchhängende Kurven" = upswept curves. A curve shape which only has disadvantages:
- less shadow detail
- bad tonal separation in the midtones
- steep curve with (often too) dense highlights.

With the current CHS 100 II you have more 'freedom' to create the curve you want:
If you want a linear characteristic curve (cc), use a developer type which is designed to give a linear cc, like e.g. DD-X, T-Max Dev, XTOL stock, Tetenal Ultrafin T-Plus.
But if you want a more (semi)compensating cc with a 'shoulder' in the highlights, just use (semi)compensating developers like e.g. Adox FX-39 II, Adox Atomal, Adox Rodinal in higher dilutions, Neofin Blue, Moersch MZB, Tetenal Ultrafin etc.

In most cases with modern high quality films, chararcteristic curves are not "hammered in stone". They can be changed to a significant extent by
- the choice of the developer
- time
- agitation method
- developer dilution.

Thanks Henning. I really appreciate your information. A characteristic curve would be handy as well.

BTW, I did not find the Adox ART/Efke films to be a bad product at all. With the right exposure and development they were capable of some amazing results. Grain, resolution and sharpness are not always the goal.

Fortunately I still have a nice cache of Efke PL25 but my PL100 is dropping dangerously low.

I will have to pick some of this new film up as soon as Freestyle starts carrying it. Has ADOX indicated whether or not it will be available in sheet film?

Dan, it is already available in sheet film for 1.5 years. And not only in 4x5" and 20x25", but also in all other rare sizes even up to 50x60cm (some of them being special order items).

Freestyle will be carrying it but also its not that we cannot ship to the US. The only problem is the surcharge so we currently have to charge 15 EUR Corona surcharge per parcel. This is worked into the quoted shipping costs of the webshop and orders can be taken anytime.

I know that FedEx is still shipping from Europe. I recently bought an old box camera from France and it got here in just a few days.

I suggest renaming the film Adopan 100.

Adox CHS 100 II is a too long and complicated name, and most users see it as a new film that doesn't have much to do with the old Efke 100/Adox CHS 100. It has better substrate, much improved elumsion and also much finer grain. "Adox CHS 100 II" sounds too much as name used during development of the product, like as if it's in an experimental stage. Adopan 100 sounds more like a normal black and white film that is out on the market. I'm sure the consumers would adapt to the new name quickly.

And it's future safe, in case there will be a series of films:

Adopan 25
Adopan 100
Adopan 400

Yes, it's a very nice film. If compared to Efke I think Adox CHS 100 II has the grain and sharpness of Efke 50 and the exposure latitude of Efke 100, and the quality is much better.

Please rename it Adopan 100

I`ve shot my first rolls of this new batch. Developed in Adox FX-39 II.
So far I am very pleased, wonderful results. Will do some further, more intensive testing soon.

Nah, than people think it is a panchromatic film, which it isn't. It is one of the few ortho-panchromatic films on the market.

I hardly shoot 135, but I bought a roll with my last order at Fotoimpex. Can't wait to put some Adox CHS in 120 in my cart.

That is no problem. Orthopan and super-panchromatic films are in the panchromatic range, but with less or more red sensitivity. Remember the super-panchromatic Technical Pan? Then Fuji Acros that is orthopan, but used as a normal pan film. The name Adox CHS 100 II doesn't tell you it's orthopan either, and the film is intended for normal use. The "CHS" part makes it sound like a speciality film like "CMS", which can confuse things. Adopan sounds more neutral and like a normal film.

I use 120 and 9x12 and 6,5x9 most of the time.
