I have an Epson v500 scanner that was working just fine on my old computer but it finally gave up on me. I have purchased a new computer with Windows 11 Home on it. I downloaded the latest Epson Scan and it sort of worked if I run in as a Windows 8 application. Buggy and crashes all the time. It won't run natively on windows 11. I downloaded the SilverFast demo and it seemed to work right up until it tries to prescan... when it initiates the scanner the scanner green light goes to a red blinking light. Ugh. I did submit a support case with SilverFast so I hope to hear something back from them

I have been able to do a reflective scan just fine with the native scan software that comes with Windows 11 so I know it's not the scanner, or the cable etc.

Has anyone else seen this sort of issue with Windows 11? Any tips or things I need to check for? Before anyone says "try rebooting" I already did that several times.

Thanks in advance.

I only have one tip - VueScan, one scanning software for just about any scanner on probably any OS.

I encountered the same issue as OP regarding W11 Pro + Epson Scan software, but was able to get Silverfast AI Studio v8.x working fine for film scanning. I first installed latest Epson Scan software, which may seem counterintuitive, since the Epson Scan application crashes, but the installer also includes the driver, which is functional, and needed in order to use Silverfast. I don't recall seeing an obvious way to install the driver without also installing Epson Scan.

Have you reloaded the installation CD that came with the scanner?

I have the latest 3.7.7.0 drivers and scan utility from Epson. I don't have the original software that came with the scanner. No need to since it is so old. Like I said I can get the epson software to run but I have to set it's compatibility to Windows 8 and its super buggy. The scan preview and scan buttons don't display in the UI until I click on where I know they are, then they magically appear.

The reply from SilverFast support said I had to have the driver installed "next to" the silver fast software... whatever that means. This is for SilverFast9, not 8 so...

I think I will have to take Hassasan up on his suggestion for VueScan. I will let you know if that works.

Thanks all,
D.

Okay, after downloading VueScan and trying it, no go... so I did some hardware tests and it turns out my scanners transparency light in the lid is broken. Ugh. Okay, so all the software is probably okay, just my boat anchor of a scanner is the issue now. Thanks all for your input. On to the new task of figuring out what to do for scanning hardware.

Check that the connecting cable between the lid and the base is okay.

This is apparently a known issue.
See if for some reason the trick with the Alt key maybe works.

my scanners transparency light in the lid is broken

I'm sorry to hear that. It's possible that it can be repaired, since I suspect the transparency light source is a LED strip and the defect is likely not in the strip itself, but in the driver circuitry. Of course, looking for a new(/used), working unit will be the easier option, or maybe it's possible to find a parts donor from which you can scavenge just the lid or even some of its internals.

There's another option: to use Virtual Machine with old OS and scanner software running on it.

I do this with Oracle Virtualbox, XP and my Plustek 7600i - works like a charm. And that VM can be loaded with scanning task, keeping the rest of the computer (main/host) free to do other tasks, like YouTube.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to give up on the scanner for film. The cable to the top unit isn't the issue unless it's just gone bad and I can't see it. In any case I just downloaded some files to 3d print myself film holders for camera scanning. I think it's the best bang for the buck considering a new flatbed is at least $400 now and all the used dedicated film scanners require way too much effort than I want to attempt for even more money.

Thanks,
D.

I plan to replace my Plustek... with Plustek. It's cheap, but you pay with time per scan. Otherwise it's a decent dedicated scanner with hyperfocal scanning (no focus to hunt, but picks all there's on film - grime, dust and scratches), especially for the money.

Agree 100 percent. It's not the most intuitive software, but once learned, it can produce excellent results.
I scan ALL films with the same settings and save to Vuescan's "RAW/DNG" format.

Update. I couldn't leave well enough alone with the scanner. I unplugged everything, blew off any dust that could be in connections, locked/unlocked all the locking sliders and started it up again. Lo and behold... it works now. However, the Epson software is still buggy and craps out without any warning and SilverFast still doesn't work at all.

I thought, "okay, lets see how VueScan works then..." and bingo! VueScan works without issue on my new windows 11 machine. No driver updating/moving/fiddling stuff. It just works. And I will say it works really well. So much better than Epson ever did. I have a custom glass neg holder and with VueScan I can get more 120 frames in one scan than the Epson software can with the holders. I don't know what software voodoo VueScan has but the quality of the scans are much better by far.

So far I would recommend VueScan to anyone. +1 for ease of use and compatibility, +1 for scan quality.

Hopefully this post may help others.

Thanks all for you help on this.

Thanks @koraks for the ALT key trick: I was having same problem with Epson Scan.

Even though I do not use VueScan regularly (I still prefer Epson Scan and Nikon Scan), I did buy a license for continued driver updates (Epson V700, Nikon CoolScan V). And it's great to support a small company that is dedicated for scanning drivers and software.
