A couple of months ago a friend who's late father was a very keen photographer gave me some expired film...among the expected Acupan and so on was a roll of Kodak Elite Chrome 200 Test Film/Kodak 1

Has anyone seen something like this before?

Elite Chrome was the consumer branding of Ektachrome. The 200 speed is interesting. I don't recall that I've seen that, and have been shooting Ektachrome since the early '90's. Although 200 ASA was a very popular speed, so it would make sense.

Also, the box is not a typical store packaging. It doesn't look like there is any of the normal artwork. Perhaps it is from a test run.

These are common test films with black cassettes and sticky labels on them with more information.

If they are marked with a number starting with FW they are early narrow width coatings and if marked with an FE they are full width pre-production samples.

I have a few of these.

Back in the good ol' days, manufacturers would hand out a new film like candy. A lot of the time IIRC Kodak would put a "sample" label on it. I don't remember if Fuji did or not.

I remember buying four rolls of Kodak Color 200 labeled 'promotional use only - Sydney 2000 Olympics' a few years ago

That is not typical of Rochester film when I was there.

perhaps Kodak Ltd. also did test runs.?

is there any other marking on the the box. most makers will do several levels of tests, and then promotional films.
Pro photographers, the photo press and sometimes sales folks might get material to test.

film has also been handed out at trade shows. I got a roll of C-41 developed and printed free one time at AV Canada by Konica who were showing their then new Washerless minilab.
