Thanks for the info. I made the switch to Ilford HP5+ a couple of years ago when the price of Tri-X was out of control and I don't have any compelling reason to switch back now. But it's good to know that Kodak has realized the error of their ways and has brought the price of Tri-X back inline with that of other B&W film stocks.
I also switched to HP5+ a while back.
I don't think Kodak has much of a choice with 35mm Tri-X. There's so many B&W films available now that they risk overpricing themselves out of the market. 120 film is another matter, and, according to the article, they're not lowering the Tri-X price in that format.
I guess it depends on the type of work you do and the volume of film you use. Kodak & Ilford are in the upper echelon of films in terms of QC, reliability and results.
At B&H there's a $0.04 difference between Ilford & Kodak in 35mm. And $1.40 difference on a propack or 5 rolls of 120. It's not enough for me to cut either of those brands out of the equation.....
In Europe Tri-X is €2 more expensive than HP5+ per roll, and that difference was more than € 3 per roll a couple of years ago but Ilford has raised the price and narrow it. I don't consider Tri-X or TMax films for BW since long time ago due to their price, and it is something common for others in the old continent.

Isn't Ilford made in Great Britain, so there are no import duties like Kodak film made in the USA? Are VAT taxes different as well?I note that this references distributor's prices, in the EU.
So there may be little or no connection with the prices charged by KA in other parts of the world.

UK isn't a member of the EU for some years now. VAT rates are the same for any film, regardless of origin.
Well there are no import duties in the UK for Ilford then compared to Kodak making Kodak priced higher all other things remaining equal. Also, aren't there VAT taxes on Ilford products in the UK at the earlier sale stages whereas Kodak has no VAT taxes until the final sale?
In Montreal, a 35mm roll of HP5+ (36) is around 13.00$, while Tri-X is 16.00$; a 120 roll of HP5+ is 12.00$ while the same in Tri-X is 18.00$.
I mostly shoot 120 these days, and I shoot a lot of it, so price is a factor. I've learned to get the results I like with HP5+, so I've eliminated Tri-X from my workflow in that format. 35mm is another matter. I do prefer Tri-X, but the price difference is still a factor.

Yes, this does indeed affect end user price levels in the UK.
If I understand that correctly, you are saying that there are import tariffs in place in UK for photographic films?
I assume there are in the UK for imports...
AFAIK there are no UK import duties on USA film and you obviously don't understand how VAT system works (in short, VAT can't be the source of the price difference between UK or USA produced film).

I understand this is a bit of an alien concept for someone from the US. Here's a thorough explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value-added_tax It boils down to the fairly straightforward situation where everyone pays VAT, but only the final user has no means of being reimbursed for VAT paid. The net result is that tax is only paid on the total value added - hence the name.
Having said that, from here on, we go back to the topic of Kodak pricing and let's not dwell on the question how VAT works (let alone whether it's a good or a bad idea).
USD or CDN ?
So VAT and tariffs have to be considered when comparing the cost of film on an international forum.
