A few years ago I bought an MB-23 battery grip for the Nikon F4, which with the grip becomes the F4E.
As good as new, never used, in original packaging.
An opportunity.
The rubber cover of the base plate is glued on, some of the glue that was visible on the side didn't bother me.
Until I recently tried to take the camera out of the closet and realized that it was stuck on the shelf. The glue had liquefied and was oozing out around the edges of the rubber cover.
Not a great condition, so I set about removing the old adhesive in order to re-attach the rubber cover cleanly.

… if it weren't for the glue that no longer stays in place.
The rubber cover is easily removed.
The adhesive can be laboriously scraped off, or rather pushed off, from the rubber cover. But sticky residue remains.
Once again, Zippo lighter fluid helps. It loosens the adhesive, which can now be scraped off almost effortlessly.
Everything is clean, but it takes time until every last sticky residue is removed.
Ventilation is important, as there is some gasoline vapor in the air.
For maximum adhesive strength, Pliobond is applied twice and allowed to dry for a few minutes.
Align, press on and remove Pliobond residue with some Zippo.
