Digital synchronous sound for 8 and 16 mm film, finally made easy! Are you tired of projecting silent films? Did you ever consider one of those old school methods with magnet tape an…
I never really thought of adding a soundtrack to my very modest movies, but the idea behind the synkino is very interesting, sounds like something that might really work.
I gave up on 8mm. I have about 450 8mm films in the Archive, but sold off the other 500 - 600 8mm films. 16mm is low enough quality for me. 16mm also shows some sophistication over 8mm, so buying 'pig in a poke' 16mm gives a better chance of getting something useable. Same was 400 reels shows some advancement over buying 50 or 100 foot reels. No guarantee, but it helps.
Pig in a poke film lot.
Now just need to save up for a cheap Lasergraphics scanner. I've got maybe 2.5 million feet of film to scan.
Cine' film is fascinating stuff to work with. Generally speaking, you can pick it up cheap...scanning is the issue, unless you are rich.
When I would project 8mm back in the 70's, I used to synch up a recorded soundtrack played on a tape recorder. Luckily for me I only have a handful of magnetic sound films in the Archive or I'd have to spend more $ for the magnetic head reader. I'm not bothering with magnetic films. 99.9% of the films I have that are sound are optical sound or silent.
Clever system, makes playback 'in-sync' easy enough. However, how does one create the sound track?
I guess one would use a frame counter on the moviola and configure the DAWs time line to show frames. Edit the sound that way, then play it back with the device.
Looks like the website for the Synkino and Github site are from a few years ago, but the author is currently active on Github with a movie film scanner. https://github.com/fwachsmuth/Filmkorn-Raw-Scanner
