The new year is 8 days old but I truly hope you are having a good year so far. Or planning a good year! I have many things on my roster so far. Been planning some trips and organizing some fun for others,
Learning new things and saving good bye to friends as well.
I plan to work with my old cameras and experiment with new ones.
So what are you doing in 2012? Do you want to have a informal gathering somewhere?
I do. I want to meet you all. Maybe I will be swinging by your area with fellow photographers. This group spans so many areas and as Ralph has shown in Latte land, he has gathered members of our group for coffee. We can do the same. Can't we?
It's up to you.
If you want to a more educational event? That can be arranged as well. Sharing ideas and techniques is what I'm all about. I have done it before and can do it again.
It's up to you.
You have a voice. You can share what interests you? Lord knows I have done so here and other sites.
Open up, speak and be heard.

As a newcomer to film, I wouldn't mind meeting, but I could be interested, even more so if anyone in the area will show us some of their medium format slides projected as I've never seen that before and heard it is something I must see.

That is something that I could also consider attending. You may recall that a similar effort was attempted a few weeks ago back in mid-December when I was down there. One place I finally concluded was a reasonable location is the Jantzen Beach Starbuck's just off I-5 as it goes over the Columbia River. I could even bring down the latest toy; the 1945 Folmer-Graflex Anniversary Edition Speed Graphic.

Medium Format slides. "Lantern" slides. Just finding a working MF projector today is a challenge. Most of the schools got rid of their old A/V equipment long ago. Lots of old Kodak Carousel 35mm slide projectors and trays still available, most of them with still un-repaired solenoid problems. The projector lamps are getting expensive. And, for a Medium Format Slide Projector, finding a place with sufficient space to fit the throw of the projection lens is not as easy as it used to be either.

So, if I'm hearing the two of you correctly. A simple gathering would be nice but you want to see medium format slides. Which would require a projector and a large enough space to see them in. I can check to see if my work has such a projector. Shriners hospital on "Pill hill". They have plenty of 35 slide gear and they have a movie size auditorium.
Any other suggestions?

Well, sir, I think that Adam would like to see some medium format slides projected.

My own "needs" in that realm were well satisfied a few years back in various science classes, biology classes, and a few others. I was merely commenting on the difficulty of locating what would now be considered by many to be an "antique" photographic projection system for medium format transparencies. Then there was also the "reversal process film" that enabled you to make projection slide transparencies directly. Again, older technology.

And, thank you for the information that there are still places available in Portland where 35mm slilde projection is still functional.

Well, I don't know long Shriners will be keeping those slide projectors. I was asked what to do with them. They installed a real fancy digital projector. You should see the size of this lens thing! It's about the diameter of a hub cap. I did ask my supervisor if we could use the space. The auditorium is on the 7th floor with a great view of Portland and foot hills across the river. No word yet.
A friend of mine says she would be happy to ask her church as well.

Hi Robert, Ralph, and others - I think any kind of get together is nice. I always look to hang out with people of the same interests. I really loved the thing we did in Vancouver awhile ago. As far as MF slides go, I have a bunch but never bothered to mount them as I had no access to a projector. Ron

If anyone really wants to see MF slides projected, I have a Rollei projector for up to 6x6 (won't do 6x7) and could be persuaded to travel

(Note to self - need to mount more of my slides!)

If by "share" you mean bringing it along so that, as a group, we can look at slides from a bunch of photographers - sure .

It is just that they need to be in mounts.

I really have to mount more of mine!

Great! Thank you. I think it would be fun to see 6x6 chromes on a projector. You say you can't do larger (6X7), what about smaller say 645?
Ralph has volunteered to bring coffee and treats. He and I thought for those of us who rather sit and shoot the breeze, have coffee and look at prints we set a place for that!
I have been speaking with a retired news photographer who has lots of interesting stories and advice. He's helping me photograph my children's Basketball games. I have others who maybe interested in talking and sharing.
I'm waiting to hear from Shriners Hospital. They have a really state of the art auditorium on Pill hill. But if that should fail the Church in Lake O is open and I can speak to WSU Vancouver as well.
Looks like fun!!!

No problem with 645.

My projector isn't really designed for auditoriums, although it would probably work in one.

It is designed for the same sort of use that most Kodak Carousel/Ektagraphic projectors were designed for - homes, meeting rooms, classrooms etc.

By the way, I also have a Kodak Carousel projector for 35mm/126/828/127 slides .

Well, Matt.
What about Vancouver, Washington?
I have just got off the phone with the new person operating the lab there and he is very interested in hosting us there. I have spoke with Hermon Joyner of Photo Media magazine and he's interesting in speaking and so is the news paper photographer. I wrote to John Wimberley to see if he would be interested in coming up. I have other ideas for us.
Does this sound good to you all?

Good morning, Robert;

For me, either day can work.

As far as Lake Oswego goes, it is about an additional hour driving time south of the Columbia River with traffic, so Matt and Gail King might notice that. It will not be a problem for me, as I have a place to stay in Portland. In fact, I will probably need to stay there a few days to get done all of the tasks that have been collecting for me down there. (A generator starting system repair, three antennas to work on, some work on the C-172, some car and truck work, and a few other things.)

First weekend in May is no good for me...but I'm just one guy. Now, if we want to get together for Forest Service cross-cut saw training...first weekend in May is great. How's Trout Lake, WA sound?

In all seriousness, one thing I'd like to have/see is maybe an hour or so informal "live forum" type round-table. Have a couple of topics planned for discussion. Maybe invite participants to prepare little 5-minute presentations or something. Something a little bit more grass-roots, as opposed to top down. And no "secret sauce" allowed! Anyway, just an idea.

I can probably make it the first or second weekends in May. The third weekend is one of the dates being considered for the Spring Alt-Photo Pacifica meeting which will be held up in Coquitlam, BC this year. The forth weekend is Memorial Day holiday weekend in the US.
