For those in B.C. - you are welcome to join, but we noted that there is already a "Vancouver" forum in existence.

A reminder that several of us are planning a first meeting in Newport, Oregon, on Sept 13-14. If you'd like to be involved in planning, please send a PM to one of us (dwross, robert Brummitt or myself)

And we'd encourage you to plan additional local events in your locality, especially if you are unable to attend this one in Newport.

Hello and Greetings.
It was time that the Pacific Northwest APUG members and photographers have some activities and gatherings in our beautiful part of the world. Washington, Oregon, Idaho and those in the State of Jefferson are all welcome. We're open to those members who reside in British Columbia as well! So, if you wish to join up? Please do so! There is a plan to host our first gathering in Newport, Oregon on Saturday-Sunday September 13-14. So far this will be a meet and greet with portfolio peeks and a field trip or two. More details to come!

Even though the hinterlands known as Idaho is in the Mountain time zone (which just doesn't make any *&#@ sense) I'm looking forward to meeting other APUGers in the NorthWest!

Good morning, Robert Brummitt;

Nice to see that you found it.

Please remember that this is an exclusive group. Oregon, Idaho, Washington, the independant regions of North California, and the like, you know. However, we might need to discuss a "Guest" policy at that first gathering in Newport, Oregon.

Enjoy;

A Portland dweller here. North Portland that is. Trying to survive as a photographer and slogging through another day of technical difficulties making enlarged pl/pds from the Rollei. I am thinking of the newport meeting. I love the Oregon coast. Maybe meet a few APUGers in person.

Hello from Enumclaw Washington. I am looking forward to meeting up with you all. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the September get together but, God and the cops be willing, I will make the next one.

Good morning, APUG of the US Pacific Northwest Regional Group;

Boy, that is a long thing to type out!

While we have seen great growth in just the last couple of days, is there merit in going outisde of the APUG web site to tell people that there is an APUG film group formed for the Pacific Northwest?

Don, Denise, and Robert, what do you think? Should we consider putting a card or something on the public bulletin boards of the local camera shops? Can we also mention to any local camera clubs, schools, or groups we have in our area that APUG and the US PacNW Regional Group is here? Do we want to publicize this Group here in the Pacific Northwest? If we do, how do we want to do it? Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Enjoy;

I would say yes but to make it clear that this is for analog photographers. Not that I'm against digital but since APUG is our host we should follow the rules. This could also be a great way to recruit for APUG and Sean. I have already made a small announcement in my group via its news letter and I know that some are APUG members already. I also noticed that the Don's original thread has made it on Large Format website. This is great in my thinking.
Thanks for the idea, Ralph.

Robert, thank you for the very prompt response.

Under the heading of your caveat, I point out that I did say that there is "an APUG film group formed for the Pacific Northwest."

About the only way that I can make it much more clear is to say that; "We use activated silver bromide crystals for our image storage medium."

I also point out that if we are going to "post" any of our photographs on the APUG site, we do need to scan them or in some way convert them to a digital form that can be sent over the world wide web or internet. I think they call that "hybrid photography." We might need to talk about that.

Don, Denise, anyone else, any suggestions?

Enjoy;

Hi Ralph,

I think outreach is as much a reason as socializing to form a face-to-face regional group. I will try to get announcements in a few local newspapers and art association newsletters ('Local' on the Central Coast is a hundred mile half-radius!).

In addition, to those of you who are coming to Newport in September, I'd like to talk about how we can rescue our community darkrooms. I'd like to make a list of those still in operation (art centers, schools, etc.) and how many are still being used and how to get those that have been mothballed back in operation. Any ideas that anyone has would be much appreciated.

I think posting this group's existence is appropriate wherever possible.

I'm not 100% convinced that "silver halide capture only" is a definition fthat definitively captures who should/should not be attracted to join...

First, there may also be a small contingent capturing via digital, creating a negative through some means (inkjet) but then executing alternative processes such as Pt-Pd or carbon or other. I'd hope that while they didn't capture via analog process, that we'd extend them grace to join by virtue of the fact that they were printing using an analog (alternative) process. I know that Dick Arentz converted over to M8 capture->2800(now 3800)->Pt-Pd four years ago....(he lives in Flagstaff and not the PNW), I presume we'd welcome people like him?

Second, would someone who captured in film, scanned and output to inkjet be welcomed, with discusssions on inkjet output aspects? I suspect not. I'll leave this one to others that have longer history with APUG.

And clearly those that were doing solely digital and solely digital output would be welcomed if their focus were to be to learn a new APUG craft. But digital-only would definitely be outside the APUG domain....there's actually an active NWPhotoforum group that covers this.

Then it sounds like we would welcome any and all who are in the pursuit of fine art photography and that suits me just fine.

Don,

Very well articulated. I am in complete agreement with you. And, if a few digital-only folk wander into our get-togethers, I'm sure the beauty of our work and our sunny dispositions will convert them to some aspect of analog :smile:.

"Any and all" - thank you, Robert.

Ooops, I guess it is probably expected to sign in, after signing on. This is Larry Bullis, in Anacortes, WA. Coming to Newport if it turns out to be possible. Gonna try.

Unfortunately, I work weekends. Perhaps a weekday outing could be planned for the Portland area.

May I suggest that you put something together for a weekay, post it and see who can do an outing on weekdays? Regretably I work weekdays so attendance would be limited to evenings.

A "Kinky" (King) County, WA dweller here. I hope to make it to the Newport, OR gathering. I'm not sure if I will make it, but we'll see.

Good morning, Russ;

Nice to see you here also. The date you requested is the weekend of 2008 September 13-14 in Newport, Oregon. They are still working on the exact place, although some of the suggested side trips seem to be fairly firm. Please let Denise (dwross), or Don (don12x20), or Robert (Robert Brummitt) know if you can come. Please note that they are also working on an alternate weekday activity for those who may not be able to come on the weekend.

I hope you can. I look forward to seeing you there.

Enjoy;

I don't usually go to the Newport area. Can someone recommend a cheap dive motel right on the beach? Is it better to stay some place other than Newport though not too far away?
Dennis

Dennis,
There isn't anything that can be called 'cheap' right on the beach, but you do have a few options. The Park Motel, http://www.newportparkmotel.com/, is four blocks off the beach, but it is clean and family-run. The Waves is probably as affordable as something with a view and it's walking distance from where we're having the meeting. http://www.wavesofnewport.com/home.cfm?dir_cat=83761. The nice thing about a September meeting is the winter rates have started but the weather will likely be perfect. There is always South Beach State Park. http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_209.php.

Hope you can make it.
