A Friend's Father

A Friend's Father

For years a good friend and I have had an annual fishing trip with his father. It started with his father showing us and debating the finer points of technique and the best position to be in, and sharing tales of days gone by ...

This is a wonderful picture. That characterization has nothing at all to do with the technical quality of the image, which is excellent,, but rather with the fact that it captures the personality of this gentleman in a significant moment with friends.

Oooh, John, I love, love, love this!!!! Well done!!!! This image gives me a real warm feeling filled with untold stories and memories. His eyes make me feel a little sad as I see him a little concerned, lost and vulnerable. I also really like how you printed this, tonality and toning. I'd be interested to know if there was any kind of reflection off onto the shadow side of his face because the detail you caught IMO is just right. Again, very nicely done John. With kind regards, Nicole

What Monophoto said.

This image is one that I would be very proud of.

Thank you.

Excellent portrait, perfect light, perfect gesture, and, as Nicole said, you've really captured something a little sad in his eyes. I suspect your friend will cherish this photograph of his father for years.

John...this is the type of photography that lit the fire in me many, many, many years ago...since I have been coming to APUG only one other image has brought those feelings back. God I love photographs like this..

Thank you for sharing,

Thank you for the generous comments. It's a moving image for me too - my friend is extremely close to his father and we have all enjoyed some great trips together. The large quantity of trout that we've relieved from the overburdened Tongariro were always secondary, but made for some great rivalry.
Not much reflection at the time of exposure Nichole, it needs a little work under the enlarger, but it was raining dismally outside the cafe giving some soft lighting - that helped.
We were all a little reserved and it felt like the right time to take the photo i'd planned.

I can't believe how much your little writeup has affected me. WOW. I have barely even looked at the picture, but now that I did so, WOW...

Thank you.
