I bought two Salyut-S cameras, both supposedly worked.

The first one worked but after firing it for about 30-60 times in total, one of the shutter straps snapped and now the shutter is inoperative.

The second one was bought "working" but it has severe shutter capping and the curtain seems to slow down at the end of the travel.

Of course, this second one requires maintenance; however the camera is underdocumented and there are no thorough guide to go down to do a shutter service. And I do have checked the service books/manuals on russian... they mostly provide diagrams but the instructions themselves are too succint.

I've seen photographs of factory replacement shutter curtain kits which appeared to include the missing instruction sheet.

I've never noticed any consistent quality difference between export and domestic Soviet cameras, so much as differences from from one year to the next, and I speculate that, during leaner times, factory managers devised "creative" solutions in order to meet their quotas. And some of those solutions may have involved older-style, or second-quality parts.

I do wish mine (kiev 88] didn’t make that crunching sound when winding on but otherwise it doesn’t give me any trouble.

Well you never have to worry about being accused of "covert photography" when using a Kiev 88; just violating sound ordinances...
