Prewet does not appreciably affect development time. This was discussed in many many posts in another thread. If you could find that one, it would be very useful.

Ok. Thanks everybody for yr advice. I will run a test tomorrow with prewetting and water stop bath.

Btw, I sent a mail to Fomafoto where I bought the film and they offered to take it back and send a new box. Good service. But I will test it once more before I send it.

Emulsion nr: 016154-05 (exp 2011-03)

So the same emulsion nr. Thanks.

I will inform the factory about this possible failure.

regards,

Robert

PS. About Fomafoto: They only did the right thing.

If I'm not mistaken Fomadon LQN contains carbonate as an accelerator. It may react with any acidic stop bath to create pinholes. Try another developer without carbonate like Fomadon P or whatever or use water rinsing instead of an acid stop and see what happens. Just developed some Fomapan 400 (35mm) in Foma R09 (new type) and Fomadon P and no problems under a 10x loupe. Stop bath was FomaCitro. Neither developer contains carbonate as far as I know.

Fomadon R09 (new) is Rodinal (R09 one shot) since end 2008 Foma is filling up their Para Amino Phenol developer in Germany at the former Agfa plant.

A Carbonate or Bi-carbonate can be only a problem on the film emulsion when the pH is close to 14.
In Diafine you can have such a situation hence in the instructions a water stop (extra flush) is recommended.

A pre-soak will extent the film emulsion a bit so that before development the very small holes are closed.

Foma, and other older style emulsions, are more sensitive to temperature and pH changes.
Keep temperature constant between solutions. They should not vary more than 1-2 degrees F.
If you use an acid stop bath, make it a very weak one. A half teaspoon of household white vinegar in a liter of water is sufficient.

The carbonate only becomes a problem at an acid pH.

A presoak will not allow closing of small holes. It will swell the emulsion and help prevent air bubbles from forming.

I will give an update on this for anyone still reading this thread.
Today I developed a neg that had been dusted before put in the holder. Then stored in a zip-lock bag. After exposure back in bag.
Developed with prewetting - developer - water stop - fix - hca - wash.

Result: About the same amount of holes in the emulsion. I will return this package and hope for a better one.
