I was wondering where one would go to see some of the largest and most festive Day of the Dead festivals, (in Mexico & outside of Mexico). Id like to see people dressed up and large parades. Like those giant skeletons operated by many people. Just something where you can take lots of great colorful pictures.

Have to wait until the end of October as it follows Halloween.

There is a lot in Mexico. The most crowded: Janitzio Island (Michoacan State), Milpa Alta (Mexico City metropolitan area), Oaxaca City. It happens the 1st and 2nd of November. It is not about people dressed up or parades, it only occurs in few places (the dress or the parades). The tradition consist basically in pay homage to the deads, the family ones, attending to the Cemetary with the food, smoke and drink that their dead ancestors liked. In some places the ceremony take place at home and the relatives set an shrine inside the house instead of going to the grave yard. The Day of the Deads (Deads in plural because it is a festivity of the people who died and not about The Dead), is perhaps the most important emotional celebration, the Virgin of Guadalupe's day is the most religious one.

My wife put up a shot of vino for her uncle and some candy for her grandparents along with some veladoras. Maybe somewhere they have something you could take pictures but seems more like a still life to me.

I would check out places to go to for the posadas (16th dec til christmas eve) or where they dance to the virgen on the 12th of dec. Last year I went to Coalcoman, Michoacan for the posadas and did some low light shots. The coolest colorful cultural stuff I've seen was near Zacapu, Michoacan on noche buena when the young girls all braided their hair with ribbons and wore the oldschool dresses and danced in the church.

Thanks for the suggestion Mateo. Thing is this is for a Macabre themed project.
So I need to build some pictures where people celebrate the dead in their own ways.
Yeah, I knew that in Mexico its celebrated traditionally with little dressing up. Though I know they have taken in Halloween for the kids in some areas.
Where can you find the largest parade with those giant skeletons that people operate like puppets and vegas style skeletons dance the streets?
