Oh, you gave too many hints! But around here we call Woolly Bears these caterpillars which are supposed to tell you the length of winter:

Was there a food source for them in the lens, or you think it got stored in a cloth case they were eating?

I think they crawled in there and died. They must have come in from the back, but they all had crossed the aperture to the front. There were no eggs or carcass on the rear side of the aperture.

After cleaning. All the glass and presumable single coating are in perfect shape. A really nice lens!!

I think I would move out. Although perhaps the centipede would eat the carpet beetles?

That's crazy regarding the lens.
