Problem with FB is - gates closed if you don't have an active account. And I don't anymore. So - here's a publicly available insight.


If Ilford decided to make and offer this for a total niche - that says they're into weird stuff. So am I. So maybe one day they'll extend the IR range of their SFX 200?!?! Please?

Redscale is not my cup of tea but who cares, it probably not me it's aimed at .

Any new colour film is always welcome.

I simply don't find the usefulness of a film that gets scanned anyway. So the very same look can be achieved by modifiyng the scanned inage in PS...

It's not my thing either but it's probably a happy by-product of the R&D into colour film that Harman know they can sell to people who enjoy "effects films". And that will help fund further R&D into products that we at Photrio are more likely to enjoy ourselves.

I see people on Instagram apparently up in arms that it isn't Portra quality colour film in 4x5 sheets.

Yes, exactly.
Phoenix with its more clear base without orange mask offers a in relative terms higher light sensitivity for turned redscale film compared to standard color negative films with orange mask.
Therefore that is a clever move by Harman.

OK, done. There's a 'report' link under every post you can use for this.

I think the idea to use Phoenix for redscale is neat. Maybe I'll sacrifice half a roll to it; I've still got some left. Might be fun.

Still want to try and reversal process it, too.

Now lets "redscale" the Harman Red and see if there's any hint of change/improvement in the Phoenix 200.

I really hoped that there would be a new Phoenix version every 12 months or so, but Red was not what I had in mind...

Video shows that it's literally Phoenix 200 - clearly marked as such. Just packaged with the emulsion side towards the shooter - making life easier for redscale folks. And that different base will make different results.

Expect nothing and don't be disappointed in anything.

This is an additional option for those who like redscale film, or who want to try it for the first time. Without the hassle of turning the film by themselves.
Redscale film usage is of course a very small niche. But for Harman serving this niche as well will certainly be good as it generates an additional income which can be invested in their ongoing R&D for color film.

So even those who are not interested in this redscale film, but in "normal" color film from Harman, will probably benefit from this film in the long term.

Normally that presenter who is a bit of a newcomer to filmcompared to most of us here gets comments that are almost 100% complimentary to him and the product he is presenting. He has gathered a massive following now from very humble beginnings so these days he is amongst the first people to be sent any new Harman products. I follow his presentations and this is the first time I have seen less than 100% complimentary comments being made

Niche within a niche within a niche. I had no idea this was a “thing”. Even more surpised to find out that there is film specifically packaged for it. Live and learn!

But how much revenue can it realistically generate? (Rhetorical question).

Have a look at the SHAKA( young presenter from the Republic of Ireland) presentation The Harman Redscale knocks every other redscale film" into a cocked hat" i.e is vastly superior

He was nothing short of effusive during the whole of his presentation but he was at least honest enough to say at the start that this was a promotional video but gave the impression that irrespective of that, everything he said "was coming from the heart"

I think I can say he is a fan

Will we get a disinterested presentation on this product? I won't hold my breath

Excluding the Phoenix project, Harman never acted this way up until now...

their were SEVERAL short clips posted on Facebook. showed a comparison beteen the look of Phenox and Harman RED, Neither looked like they had an AHU layer. But the back of the RED did look like the working side of a colour film. Video clip was not claer enough to see if the entire film was coated in reverse order, or if it was just loaded Emulsion Out in the Cassette.
I am unlikly to try either of them with the Hastle these days of getting colour film processed, I only want to bother with film where I can expect GREAT results.
