If the emulsion is not IR-sensitive, they can use an IR camera! It won't be very detailed, but it won't be black either.

Cheers,
Flavio

Hi Flavio D'onadio,

They are using a IR camera to watch over the coating process. But on the video they say they will have to work under total darkness, so perhaps there is a reason why Ezio and Marco can't use IR googles. Perhaps the IR googles are not light tight enough or something like that..

Fantastico!

At least the utilities and other sudden delay events in a hitting back end matter are not the main issue, and it's all down to business now!

Any chance you can send the rewards backers a sample of the green coated acetate?

It would make a nice souvenir of the first material coated since the facility closed...
Even better - make this available in 16mm format with perfs. This would make good leader for my 16mm film collection

Flavio,

(Our parents have good taste for names, huh?)

I've heard from someone here at APUG that uses IR goggles in his/her darkroom.

Like I said, if the film is not IR-sensitive, you can "shine" IR radiation all over it, no problem. The goggles should show this radiation as light.

At least, in theory, that's how it should work. But I might be wrong.

Cheers,
Flavio

We must be patient, Rome wasn't built in a day :D . This is amazing progress. I'm so happy for the team. Hopefully everything will come together nicely. To have another film coating machine in the world is a great thing. It is a great cultural as well as technical achievement. Like saving a rare work of art.

Dwaynes photo lab used IR goggles in their darkroom, so did Ferrania themselves with the big boy coater, you could see him put them on before he switched the lights off. You can see that video on youtube that someone posted the link to earlier on this thread...

Hello all you faithful thread-watchers!

Progress!!

Thank you very much Dave for the update!
That's very encouraging news.

Film and photo paper coating is such a fascinating process (and science!). I will never forget the last Ilford factory tour (with Simon Galley as our tour guide; Simon we miss you!), where they have done a coating on their pilot coater extra for us visitors. I was only about 50 cm away from the coating head: awesome!!

All the best to the Film Ferrania team and you!
Best regards,
Henning

Thanks, Nzoomed! I didn't notice that on the video.

Exciting to see a old new film coming up in my generation.

Wish it will be more saturated...

Hi everyone,

I just posted a new update about the ramp-up to production: Dead Link Removed

As I'm sure many of you know, we still have a lot of steps between having base material and having color reversal film, so knock wood or whatever you do...

Yes the emulsion will be another challenge I expect.
I know you have had all your chemistry expire when it was planned to be used for the last batch.

Do you still have plenty of chemistry available?

Nice!!
I also noticed that now you're using the old (1950s style, rounded font, no serif) Ferrania logo. It is much nicer than the 3M-era (square font with square serifs) ferrania logo!

I'm knocking wood...

The short answer is yes. We have more than plenty of some components. But we don't have plenty of everything.

This is the subject of an upcoming post...

Such a elegant solution to slitting the acetate base. Very good! So glad that there is existing stock. Extrusion of acetate film is not a simple process. One step at a time. It's a miracle that the 1917 machine lives on!
It looks as if it could go at least another hundred years. If needed you could run it with a windmill and a belt
Very Best Regards Mike

Hi Flavio. We're actually using both logos, plus a new one!

We of course LOVE the original Ferraniacolor logo that was their main identity until the 3M purchase (1920s-60s). We've used that on t-shirts, and we will very likely use it again in the future. Dead Link Removed

The logo on our Kickstarter boxes is based on the late-60s 3M-Ferrania logo: https://goo.gl/ZaHWXo

The logo at the top of our website is the new one. We like it so far, but it's not set in stone. I think of it as the early Ferrania logo by way of Barbara Kruger...

Hi Dave - Looking forward to receiving my film from the Kickstarter, and it's good to see the team making progress!

I didn't see anything on the official site, but will Ferrania be selling any swag (t-shirts, hats, etc.) with logos? Very neat looking, especially some of the historical branding.

Thanks!

Jim

Thanks Dave, thats good to hear!
Anyway, couple of points i would like to make.

I see its mentioned that the formulas were designed for acetate base, but something that may not have been pointed out, is actually (to my surprise) that most modern films still made today by kodak and fuji are using acetate base.

The only real exception is motion picture films, but also some other stocks like rollei digibase made by agfa that is extremely prone to light piping due to the highly transparent nature of the polyester base.

I guess what im trying to say is when reading the article, it sounds like its an outdated formula from the scotchchrome days, when really its not that outdated at all and acetate film base is on the majority of films made today.

Other thing regarding logo, perhaps we should take a vote?

I dont hate the 3M era logo, and think its great to use on limited edition products as you have planned for the first batch, but for any future logo, my preference is to retain the retro ferrania logo in some shape or form on all future film ferrania films.
Logo-Ferrania.jpg

We could have ferraniacolor 100, 200 400, 800 etc with the retro ferraniacolor logo (i quite like it

Also interesting to note is it appears that along the sprocket edge of the last solaris films, was infact the original ferrania logo still imprinted along the frame numbers!

Would be cool to keep these features retained if possible

I've moved house since the kickstarter, where do I go to change my address and make sure the film goes to me?
Don't want the *rs*h*le who bought my house to get my film as well...
