The "Obscura".
I can think of a few photographers that this would seem to be perfect for!

Wow.
The watch features...
an exposure gauge complication based on the Sunny 16 Rule, a clever and time-tested method for determining proper exposure without the need for a light meter.
So you get to save the expense of a $100 light meter if you buy this $650 watch. Except of course that the light meter would actually tell you something you'd want to know.

I do like an add that refers to a feature as a "complication".
Seems consistent with my first post in the thread.

I will buy two of them, one for each wrist so that I can constantly compare them to see which one is correct.

My camera came with a Sunny-16 meter on the back. Sucks as a watch.

Of course there are already a lot of cameras that have this built-in -- and in an easier, more accurate way. Of course you have to buy the camera -- which will set you back about $50. And the camera won't tell you what time it is.

I looked but can't figure out how to use it. OK I know now. It does something I can do in my head. I think it's for the "Triangle" crowd.

Besides charging $650 for something you can easily do in your head, here are the manufacturer's instructions from the website making it seem complicated:

How to use the Exposure Gauge:

  1. Turn the bezel indicator clockwise to match your lens aperture with the corresponding value on the chapter ring.
  2. Then, find the correct ISO marker on the dial-ring based on your film speed:
    ISO 100 or +1 (ISO 200)
    ISO 400 or +1 (ISO 800)
  3. The ISO marker points to the corresponding shutter speed.
  4. Based on lighting conditions (sunny or cloudy with minimal shadows), use the shutter speed indicated on the bezel to properly set your camera and make your image.

That's quite an accomplishment. They took a principle that was really simple and involved no tools whatsoever and only half a dozen sober/awake brain cells to operate, and made a machine for it that's expensive, counterintuitive and unnecessarily complicated. It's amazing what technology can do for us today.

It's called entrepreneurship.

£508 for a watch with a built in exposure calculator? I have seen some better cardboard calculator versions.

An actual waterproof, stylish and rugged wrist light meter with incident metering and decent EV range is something I'd be willing to pay at least $200 for... too bad this product does not seem to have any light sensor in it.

I take my Gossen Digisix everywhere for the last 15 years, and it's thin plastic.

Hmm. Just another circular slide rule, less useful than most.

And they granted a pattent for that thing?

If they try to sell me something, they should allow me to ask such a question.

Have you asked? Many things are made with components from different sources. Sometimes it is almost impossible to find out where something is made, they bury it on the website if it is mentioned at all. From my casual research when making a purchase, It appears that companies selling Chinese-made products are the biggest offenders.

If a watch manufacturer wants to produce a watch aligned to photographers, how about a bezel aligned to a photographer you wish to pay homage to that day? It could consist of a ring with letters like HCB, ATGET, AA, WEEGEE, KERTESZ, ETC, to remind the photographer who you were trying to emulate that day. Ridiculous, but simple.

Finally, an idea more absurd and useless than the Sunny-16 watch!
