A lot of conflicting sources if Kiev 30 cartridges can be used in Minolta 16 cameras, some claim they are identical, some claim not, is there is a definitive answer?

It's simple. Minolta cartridges (and copies of them that were sold when Minolta 16 was in production) will work in all Minolta and Kiev 16 mm cameras. Kiev Vega cartridges are dimensionally identical to Minolta cartridges. Kiev 30, 303, etc. cartridges have a reduced takeup spool diameter to allow a longer film strip to fully advance into the takeup chamber, and will not fit in Minolta or Kiev Vega cameras.

In theory, one could modify a Minolta by replacing the advance fork with a narrower one to make that camera compatible with later Kiev cartridges, but the counters would still run out at 20 frames instead of continuing to (IIRC) 30 as the Kiev cameras do.

Source: I own multiple Minolta cameras, and one each Kiev 30 and 303.

Donald is right on, but there is more to the story than just what cassettes will work in which cameras because Minolta and Kiev changed the size of their negatives over time. This adds a fly to the ointment -- how much film to put in the cassette! To help straighten it all out, you can check out this SUBCLUB page:

Thanks for the tip, Kiev cartridges seem much easier to find.
I have 3d printed Minolta ones, but the lack of light sealing makes my overly shaky hands struggle doing the entire process in the dark.
Not to mention, tape seems to struggle to adhere to the inner reel.

If I swapped the reel/spool/call it whatever of the Minolta 16 and the cap, into a Kiev one, then that would work, just less film length?

Thanks, I need to make something up to help me better measure it in the dark bag, I end up undershooting a bit just trying to wrestle with a ruler.

I haven't tried this, but...

The spool and cap would fit into the Minolta camera, but I wouldn't count on the Minolta cap (original or 3D printed) fitting correctly on the Kiev cassette base. No harm in trying it to check fit, though.

I also don't see the benefit if you have trouble with the tape sticking to the 3D printed Minolta spool.

When I reload Minolta cassettes, I use an extra long piece of tape so that it goes around the take-up spool and attaches to the film on both side. That keeps it in place, for sure.

With the Kiev 2 cassettes, I don't need tape because they have a metal clamp to keep the film attached to the spool. The clamp is easy to miss, but it should be there.

It's also easy to lose in a dark bag, so some used cassettes may no longer have it. It ought to be fairly easy to fabricate a replacement for someone with metal shop tools...

Thanks for the tips, I've been practicing more and the 3d printed cartridges are still a headache, but there isn't much I can do.

The tip about using even more tape has helped a bit.

I picked up a Kiev Vega 2 cheaply from Ukraine, it comes with some cartridges. I'll try mixing and matching parts to see if I can find a more light tight setup for the Minolta.
Otherwise, I may just end up using that more than my Minolta QT.
The 10x14 image size means I got some cheap double perf b&w film, 100 feet worth of experimentation. While cutting down film isn't so bad, the one I got 3D printed doesnt always cut precisely or evenly.

These are the photos I got using Kodak ImageLink HD. It's been expired for about 4 years. I still took photos at 100 ISO. I got the following photos. I'm not very experienced in developing and shooting, but I like the photos I got. In addition, the film base is transparent.

What developer did you use?

I picked up a Kiev Vega 2 cheaply from Ukraine, it comes with some cartridges.

The Vega 2 may or may not have the higher capacity cartridge -- I've never handled one. It'll be obvious when you have the two cameras and their cartridges together, though.

From what I've gathered, there isn't a clear-cut answer since different users have experienced varied results. If you can, try testing one in your Minolta 16 and see if it meets your needs

Wasn't the Vega 2 the first of the Soviet line that used the larger frame? But still no focusing lens, so somewhere between the Minolta 16 II and the Kiev 30.

Apparently the Vega 2 was the same 10x14 frame size, and a focusing lens, but maybe a slightly different cartridge

I didn't realize the Vega 2 had a focusing lens, but regardless which cassette it uses, I'd personally stick with a 30 (or 303, but 30 by preference for its wider selection of shutter speeds). In the Minolta line, as I recall the QT had a focusing lens (unless I'm transposing that with the MGs), and limited manual exposure control, but uses an obsolete 6V battery (possibly replaceable by two lithium coin cells and a conductive spacer?) for its meter. Both of those models had the larger frame, but still require the Minolta 20-frame cassette.

The Vega 2 was the first to use the updated cassette from Kiev -- which I call the Vega 2 cassette. All it did was allow more film and 30 exposures. The later Kiev cameras increased the image size -- but, as a result, you don't get 30 exposures.

The Vega 2 cassette will not fit in the original Vega, and it won't fit in any Minolta 16mm camera either. The original Vega cassette and the Minolta cassette will work fine in any Vega or Kiev 16mm camera.
