I have a 85 1.4 AF-D lens, I love it. Use on F5 or digital works great, and if I want to put it on my older mechanical bodies that works too. Very reliable and sharp.

Always wanted one but just too expensive. I've had 85 1.8 for 40 years and could never justify the added expense. Of course if I want "cream" I resort to brute force. 8X10 with a Pinkham & Smith Series IV.

To expensive says the man with the 8X10 with a Pinkham & Smith Series IV. Seriously though, I just happened on the 1.4D by dumb luck, actually went to but a different lens that turned out to have a problem and ended up with the 1.4D for a good price. If I owned the 1.8 I’m sure I'd be happy with it too.

You would be. They're close to identical at f/2 and up. The 1.4 really buys you the extra speed more than extra "cream" on these. Mostly I like the sharpness of them, and lack of distortion. And I have both and have used the crap out of them. Film or digital, they're a favorite for me. And one of Nikon's best lenses.

Priorities I suppose. Every time I save enough to buy a proper Nikon outfit, I spend it on some old tom foolery like Pinkham's and PortLand's and Petzval's such.
