Nikon F Repair Places and Costs?

Apparently the OM optics were good enough that Moviecam rehoused them for their cameras. I knew of many Nikon mount conversions for cinema, but the Moviecam rehousing was news to me. If they were good enough for mopic production work…
I lusted after the OM because they were small, unobtrusive and very quiet compared to other slr’s of the time, and I couldn’t afford a Leica M. The Nikon F (especially with that massive FTn finder) was kinda huge, and loud. But their support network was unmatched and they were perhaps the most robust slr’s out there (maybe still are!).

The F and F2 were very well built, the manager at the Nikon service center in London where I had my cameras serviced told he that he thought the F2 was even stronger than the F. I don't how he came to that conclusion, never had an issue with either my F or F2 and I bought them used. I;m just getting ready to box up my black F to send it to Blue Moon in the new week or so for servicing. The FTN meter on my chrome body is still working, but once the meter cells die it will be done for.

I've decided to go on and service my own. Can't really be any harder than any other camera I've worked on. Don't really want to, but then I don't really want to cook supper every night or wash laundry or go to the grocery store. But none of that is going to get it done themselves.

No competent tech is likely to quote a firm price to work on a 50+ year old camera without first examining it in detail to understand the time, effort, and parts that will be required. There are too few techs and too many cameras needing repair, nobody wants to undertake something that could turn into a real hassle. That’s just how the repair market is today.

I had good experiences with them as well, sent a Mamiya C330, G690 and some LF shutters. They try to moderate their backlog which beats waiting a year for a Rolleiflex 6008 repair I had elsewhere.
