Looking to buy a Nikon Super CoolScan 9000ED it would be great if it incudes the tray for 120 Medium Format film.

Thanks!

I am going to ask the obvious question and that is have you looked at Ebay? I did and there is a lot on the site and most was (it powers up but is untested) and they are asking big bucks for this junk and a couple of really nice looking posts for $2-$3 thousand and more but this was all plug it in, as long as you have a really old computer and obsolete hardware to hook it up you are good to go.

My next question is, what are you going to do with the 9000? The reason that I ask is that I'm in the process of digitizing about 50 years of color and B&W negatives and I'm curious about all the different ways that analog photography can be digitized.
I have a good friend who has one of these beasts and he absolutely loved it. I say loved it because it stopped working like it should a couple of years ago and he had already gone to digital capture so he never did anything with it as they are difficult and very expensive to repair.

Good luck in your search for that elusive Unicorn😉

The 9000 is certainly not an extinct unicorn. There are places that still fixes these machines and replace the vulnerable FireWire chip which tends to be the root cause of failure. Their asking price is similarity 2-4 thousand which would be a better option than a random ebay listing..

Having said that, I wouldnt pay 2-3 thousand for one either but I would never give up my 8000 for a digital scan. Ymmv.

I did check eBay and they are too expensive for the uncertainty.

I am going to scan my medium format film. I was shooting a bunch of 35mm last year and used my CoolScan 5000 ED and it’s amazing!

But this year I’m focusing a little more on medium format. Adding cameras to my collection and need a scanner to scan. Since the CoolScans perform so well. I wanted to get the 9000.

Let me know if your friend wants to sell his beast or not. I would be interested!

Thanks!

Look no further than the Coolscan Facebook group. There are a couple of pro technicians on there who refurbish and sell Coolscans at extremely reasonable prices. I bought mine from there, works flawlessly 4 years after purchase. Definitely one of my best film photography buys so far.

I’m in that group already! Frank is an amazing tech. I sent him my 5000ED after I bought it off of Craigslist for a good price. And he did a full CLA on it. Also bought the sa-21 adapter from him converted to do full rolls!

Idk what the going rate is for these scanners but I have some suggestions.

First Plustek completely re-did their 120 design and re-released it this year. Silvergrain Classics recently reviewed it: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1824380-REG/plustek_of120_optic_film_120_scanner.html/reviews

Second for slightly more than what you might spend on a CS9k you may consider an IQSmart2: https://www.scansolutionsonline.com/products/refurbished-flatbed-scanners/

the IQS2 is a superior scanner in some ways. You can do 2 rolls at once, the quality of the scan will be slightly better at I think roughly the same resolution. It's also much easier to hold film flat using the IQ series. For a little more you could get a IQSmart3 which is even better.

Always dreamt to own one of these. Perhaps one day.

Just a note that film flatness has long stopped being an issue with Coolscans. A guy in Germany (who is also active on the aforementioned Facebook group) 3D prints exceptional 3rd party film holders for the 8000ED and 9000ED. I have a set and I've not used the original holders ever again. I'm seeing impressive corner-to-corner sharpness and perfectly focused grain even in my 6x9 negatives, and I only have the basic magnetic holders of his - he also makes a set which includes anti newton glass if I remember correctly. Worth contacting him early though, he has a huge order backlog these days.

He said this video is out of date. But his email is listed.

I took his email from the YouTube video description. The video is 4 years old I’m assuming he still has the same email. I messaged him on Facebook Messenger Feel free to ask: coolscan@gmx.de

I have one to sell. Include the following items. However, I see that you are in Delaware. Shipping from California is a pain -- this beast is delicate and prone to damage during shipping from my understanding (the 8000ED is even worse). PM me if interested.

Nikon Coolscan 9000ED Scanner
Power cable
Apple Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (compatible with Apple Macbook Pro after 2012)
IEEE 1394 Firewire cable 9 pin to 6 pin male to male (compatible with Apple Macbook Pro prior 2012)
Nikon FH-869G glass holder, a hard to find holder that flattens the negatives, for scanning 645, 6x6, 6x9, 6x17, XPAN negatives. This holder alone costs over $600!
Nikon FH-869GR rotating glass holder, another hard to finder holder that flattens the negatives, for scanning 645, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9 negatives. This holder alone costs over $500!
Nikon FH-869S strip holder for scanning 645, 6x6, 6x9, 6x17 negatives
Nikon FH-835S strip holder for scanning 35mm negatives
Nikon FH-835M slides holder for scanning 35mm mounted slides
Replacement mask set for Nikon FH-869GR glass film holder

Could not thank you enough Northeast.
Very reassuring info.

Hi @srtviper15 are you still looking for one? I am located in Philadelphia and have a Coolscan 9000 with the 120 (non-glass) holder, 35mm strip film holder, and PCI-E Firewire card that I have been considering selling for some time. I have always been very satisfied with the quality of the scans but have been shooting less medium format lately, enough so that it is not quite worth the opportunity cost of me keeping it. I will probably list it publicly in the next month or so, but if you are still looking I would rather sell to a forum member. Philly to DE is ideal, as it is within driving distance and does not require shipping. Shoot me a message if you're interested!

I know the old rule of "if you have to ask, you can't afford it," but what would you entertain for an offer to sell the kit? If you want to PM me that is definitely fine as well
