Hey guys,

I started feeling like my head is gonna explode, because I cannot make this decision and I just need somebody to advise me what to do.

So I am on a budget of $450-500.
I am looking for a point-and-stoot-ish high-quality tank to last me for years.

Things that I take pictures of – random people, friends, my wife, and cityscapes. My main goal is to always carry a camera with me, daily basis, and to take in in all the trips (I have a film SLR with huge and heavy glass on front of it that I am tired to carry everywhere).

Things that I care about in a camera:
Lens (surprise-surprise). I like it to be as sharp as possible with as little aberration as possible.
Size – since I want to carry it daily I want it to be as small and light as possible.
Durability – both cameras are old and I am afraid they might break on me after a month or so.
Looks – I do design for life so I like to use pretty stuff. I really like black cameras.
Now the last thing might sound stupid – number of situations where I can use my camera. With my SLR with 50mm lens I often found rooms too small to shoot in. With 1.2 glass I usually was still not able to get good results in low lit situations (never owned a flash).

So I have two options right now – a champagne T2 and a jet black TVS III. Both about same price. T2 is used but cosmetically looks ok, which makes me thing it was either taken care of, or not shot too often. TVS III is almost like new, very slightly used.

What I am afraid of with TVS III is that it will be too dark (slow) because of the smaller apertures, and I will not be able to shoot it in as much situations as with T2. Also that the door is taking too long to open and I will miss shots. And the main thing – that when I go out of 30-40mm range, the lens will produce a low quality images (I had several cheap p'n's and their zoom lenses SUCKED at long focals).

With T2 I'm afraid that fixed lens will not let me capture portraits/cityscapes as easy as TVSIII. And I don't like the champagne color. I mean it's not THAT big of a deal, and I certainly don't have money for titanium black or black T2, and it's all about the pictures, but the black TVS looks so much sexier.

In all my life I have only had a film SLR (fujica AX5 with 50mm 1.2 lens) and bunch of cheap crappy film and digital p'n's, so I have no idea what is it like to shoot with a premium camera or with lens other then 50 mm.

I cannot hold any of two cameras before buying them. I cannot buy two.

Awesome pics that got me thinking about TVS in the first place: https://www.flickr.com/photos/34510476@N03/

Bellamy Hunt of JCH about all contax cameras http://www.japancamerahunter.com/2011/05/contax-compact-cameras-are-awesome/ (stating TVSIII is a "hidden gem") and about T2 http://www.japancamerahunter.com/2012/05/the-contax-t2-the-killer-compact/

What are your thoughts, guys?

Methinks your fighting an uphill battle on this one.

Regardless of relative speed between the two Contaxes 2.8/35 vs 3.7-6.7/30-60.
Neither will give good or even adequate low light performance if you can't get acceptable results with your current(1.2) stuff.

They are pretty though.

I have the original TVS and it is a fantastic camera. The lens is pretty incredible. If it is going to be your only camera, get the zoom. It isn't a lot of zoom, but it helps. I don't know the speed of the TVSIII's lens, but at 28mm the TVS is f/3.5 which isn't too bad. Less than a stop difference to the T2.

I have a used TVS: upside= fabulously sharp lens. Downside= slightly wobbly on/off switch i think caused shutter mechanism to fail ( I sent it back to Japan, via Kyosera, and they fitted a new one for about £100, it is now very good indeed). Its zoom is a bit limited, but oh, the picture quality is as good as Leica ( and I regularly shoot with Leica). Hope this helps.
