Ok, perhaps try some shots at only 4 stops over (25 iso) next time, see how that works for you. It definitely worked for ME Super and for me, although admittedly in my case it was with SFX200, not the Rollei.

Yes next time I had planned to use EI 12 as a base with bracketing.

Yes, that would be cool. There are huge sugar cane farms (is that the right word?) around 100-150 miles from here. Sometimes I drive around those regions and should take my Sinar with me more often.

I have just learned that sugar cane is harvested 18 months after planting. So, between January and March, there will be some new seedlings being planted and some well-developed plants that would be harvested around July. But, at this time of the year, it rains a lot and the sky is cloudy and pale.

Sugar cane is harvested pretty much at the same time as corn, when the sky is dark blue and there are almost no clouds in the sky — winter down here.

Guess I’m gonna have to rush to get the late harvests (and a fairly blue sky) or wait till next year.
Sugarcane is an important crop in Louisiana, mostly in South Louisiana. I once had a sugarcane farmer tell me that they were able to get two crops a year down there. I sometimes wonder about that because sugarcane is harvested every year down there in November and December at which time it it taken to "mills" to be pressed and the juice cooked into sugar They do leave the "stubble" in the fields which grows into the next crop. Maybe this is what he meant by "two crops".........Regards!

A couple more from that IR roll discussed above, both shot on the 501CM with the Planar 3.5/100 lens:

I'd like to try more, but the weather has been terrible for IR lately (heavily overcast pretty much every day).

Have you ever tried IR on overcast days? I ran several rolls once through my C330 on an overcast day. There was quite a bit of IR response even so, that surprised me.

I have not tried it, but what I read about IR photography led me to believe the results would be disappointing. Please post examples if you have them.

Meanwhile, here's another of mine. Hasselblad 501CM, 4/180 Sonnar, Fuji Pro 400H, hand-held (ironically I didn't bring any IR400 with me on this trip, as I didn't have my tripod with me. The conditions would have been ideal):

My IR photographs which were back lit or on taken on an overcast day have been disappointing.

I've had good results with near-infrared on overcast days, but the subjects didn't include much if any of the sky.

Sirius,

So sorry for the long delay in my response. No excuse really, just working. The first 4 are out of a Mamiya C330f, Rollei IR 400 and a 720nm filter. The overcast was not real "heavy" but there was no blue sky or direct sun. The last one is from a pinhole camera on Rollei Retro 80S with a #29 filter, just like the file name says. Bring a pillow if you plan to try IR with a pinhole, this exposure was somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-40 minutes 80S is an interesting film and bears some investigation.

The details in grass fields seems to get lost with Rollei IR 400 and a 720 filter.

That’s probably due to the processing I used to reduce the size of the files. Prints from these negatives are have lots of detail there.

GLS . . THAT is a stunning image. I am still trying to find my legs with Acros 100. Can you tell me what time of day (looks like late afternoon) and processing details?. Did you shoot it at 100? I have had so so results with D76 and Microdol X so far.

Thank you for the kind words.

It was 1:43 pm about a week ago. The day was fairly sunny. The Acros I rated at 80 and metered normally. Development involved a pre-soak at 22 C for 5 mins, then souping in Pyrocat-HD 1:1:100 at 22 C for 14 mins, using Sandy King's "minimal agitation" method (continuous for 1st minute, then 10 seconds at the 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 points of development).

This film/developer combination is just wonderful for woodland scenes IMO.
