I guess I'm right down the middle on that one.

I think there is generally the right tool for the job, or maybe the "best" tool for the job. Then there are situations where the tool isn't the best, yet someone with skill is able to bridge the gap - with some acceptable compromises, possibly.

Then there are situations when the right tool is really needed.

I know this is analog-only, but a good example: I shoot a lot of wildlife photography - mostly birds. Its a very special niche that relies heavily on skill, knowledge, preparation, and equipment. I can excel at the first three parts of that equation, but if I don't have the fourth - a camera with high fps, fast/unlimited buffer, great autofocus coupled to a quality telephoto lens - I'm a lot less likely to get the shot. And if I brought the Holga to that gunfight - no way.

And yet, people used to take excellent wildlife and bird photos back in the days of film, when you might only have eight or twelve frames on a roll. Those were the tools that were available then, and the photographers learned to do good work with them.

And sometimes, you don't need much in the way of darkroom magic, either.

Brownie Hawkeye Flash, .EDU Ultra 100, Parodinal 1:50, scan from print (multigrade, I forget what brand, split filtered, Dektol 1+2).

Back in olden times would you believe people even used sheet film in press cameras to get photographs like these:

How did they ever do it without shooting 70 frames per second and no viewing screen for chimpin'??

Is there a way to lock this thread down? I don't see it as an option for the OP like it is in other forums that I frequent. Unless I am overlooking it.

Not for most threads - although if you want a moderator to do that, you could "Report" your own post and include the request. If they agree, they can close the thread.
I wouldn't necessarily bother though. The wandering that has happened is part of the site's character.
If you want to bring it back on track, try posting another Holga 120N shot

While we are talking about Holga images, I get really mixed feelings were these compliments or not

To get things back on track, here's another.

This was shot at the same waterfall as the first pic I posted, on the same day. A bit of detail work closer in, on Kodak Ektar 100 film. I think it was about a 4 or 5 second exposure.

I've always liked "lo-fi" camera images, when they're made by someone who is aware of their limitations. I have about 15 Holgas and Dianas, and enjoy using them. Here's one:

Eddie, one question: Do your Holgas behave the same way and give similar results or do they all have their own "personality"?

I ask you that because I have a couple of Lubitel but they both give me similar (and "flawless") images...

They all behave a bit differently (more so with my Dianas, which I prefer to Holgas). The shutter spring isn't exactly a precision item, and they will stretch a little with use, so exposures can be slightly different. They all also leak light differently, but I tape them up with black duct tape to try to mitigate the leaks.

I can answer for my two Holga's - both have shutter speeds that are similar, at least enough that I can't tell a difference. Lens "quality" seems to also be the same, along with zone focusing being similar. I guess I was lucky in that regard.

Where they differ is that one has a nice winder that has very audible clicks and feels good, while the other barely makes a noise and feels "sloppy". Also, the one with the nice winder has a focus ring that feels nice and tight and stays where you put it, while the other is sloppy and moves around on its own a bit.

Two broken holgas in a row? And I thought these were quality cameras?

I ordered second Holga from ebay and it was straight away always in "bulb" mode. Demanded refund ..

If anyone is interested, here is one of mine, outfitted with a few extras. Threaded cable release and rear clip from Holgamods.com. Note that I still have tape on it "just in case".

Nice! I've thought about getting the rear clip, but I've been doing well enough by just taping part of the roll film seal to the back to remind me what I've got in there. I should do what you do though and add a completely different strap - I've lost or destroyed most of mine...

I have about 6 Holgas (maybe more) and they're all different. The vignetting, light leaks, shutter (broken ones that like to stay on bulb permanently) are all different - so much so that I can usually tell which image came from which camera. My biggest disappointment so far has been my Holga GN - I was was hoping to get some sharper images with the glass lens, but they're terrible and the mask scratches up the film as well (I've tried removing it but the tape I put in there to cover the rough edges won't stay put like what I've got in my first Holga - I taped that up over 13 years ago and it's still holding up!). Actually, that's not true. Biggest disappointment is the camera I got modified by Randy at Holgamods - it came back fine but I've only been able to put a few rolls through it before it completely broke down (so much so I want to use it for parts for other Holga mods).

Say, I just remembered, I have a Diana type camera, an Anny 44 (4x4 on 127) plastic fantastic, plastic lens, etc. As I recall it doesn't tension the film well and has no pressure plate. Seems I don't have any images on file from it, though. I know I've shot at least one roll in it; that implies there was nothing worth scanning.

I guess I'll have to dig up a couple spools and cut a roll to put in it. Only been a dozen years since I cut 120 for 127, and I did it on my lathe, which is still in storage. Guess I'll have to stop by the tobacconist and get a cheap cigar cutter.

I'll add another.

This one is a little more "Holga-esque", as you can see some flaring on the plastic lens from when the car drove by me. Shot in downtown Springfield, Ohio on Kodak Ektar film. IIRC it was around a 30 second exposure. When I was there at the time I didn't realize that the clock tower showed 2 different times.
