Card 17 arrived on Saturday. mike c - "2 Linemen". Thanks. I like the silloetting of the linemen by the sun behind the pole. Was this picture framed and taken or just snapped.
Both I would say, they started working on replacing the pole early and worked all day. I used 3 rolls of film covering them thru out the day, the pole was in my neighbors back yard.

Oh God, so that is the key to your enigmatic card!
I received your "Fugitive light" about a week ago and since then I've been trying to decipher it:smile:
An unusual play of tones.
Thanks Black Dog!

I also received the jvo's Washington DC card.
I thoroughly checked it expecting to find some more wildlife yet unknown to orthodox science. Found nothing of the sort, but got the idea:smile:
Thanks!
It was a shelf in my parents' house-the light was coming through a skylight to the left of me. I always enjoy photographing this apparently everyday sort of subject.

I'm glad everyone's enjoying my cards - it was really fun making them  I was worried the matte paper would get damaged in the mail so I sprayed them with some Hahnemuhle protective spray - hopefully they all arrived virus free !

Hopefully everyone's staying healthy and keeping their spirits up during the apocalypse.

I just received fatso's Northern Exile. Either an arctic junkyard or a rather nasty coming together of vehicles on a northern Canadian highway. Very cool. And where did you get that cool paper: panoramic postcard paper? I would definitely buy some of that!

Thanks Paul!

The photo was taken in a junkyard in an Inuit village in northern Quebec. Each village is isolated and only accessible by plane so it's almost impossible for them to repair their vehicles - when they break down they get taken to the junkyard - also known as the "Canadian Tire" where people scavenge for parts.

I made the cards myself in Photoshop and printed the mailing info on the reverse side of the paper (Epson Hot press Bright)

Wow! I've read about the Piezography inks but to actually see (and hold) the grays and details from a drum scan. Excellent! I was a little concerned about sending matte fine art as a post card, but it arrived in good condition with minimal scuffing and edge tearing. Finally, smart use of your paper. I hate cutting paper to size and wasting little strips.

The piezography inks are fantastic. Their older inks were beautiful too but were lacking in d-max on matte paper. Their more recent inks are super dark, even darker than the newest epson inks and come as two shades of inks (cold and warm) that can be split toned.

I received you card a few days ago and I've really been enjoying it. A quality image with a good sense of humor on the back!

Glad you liked it

I’m really enjoying receiving “Northern Exile” from Paul (Fatso) Ozzello. Enjoyed reading about your camera and printing process in above post. Just a Merry Apocalypse to you.
Howard

Paul (Fatso) Northern Exile - Fantastic image, elevated even further by the print quality. I am curious - if you don't mind sharing, what paper is that?

Thank you. I usually print on a lighter weight Hahnemuhle photo rag but chose a thicker Epson Hot Press Bright for the cards.

Over the last week or two I received three postcards that really brightened my day. This exchange is godsend in these worrying times.

"Northern Exile” by Paul (@fatso ) Ozzello
"2 Linemen" by Mike (@mike c) Clark
"Tugboat on the Hudson" by @Rowreidr (not sure if it is Patrick, Reilly or Rowen)

Every one of these three strong photographs fill me with a sense of nostalgia. It seems that they were taken much longer ago that actually is the case. Time is a funny thing.

Thanks for this!

As always, I’m a bit late to comment, sorry. Really a wonderful set of cards this round! Thanks to all!

RowreidrTugboat on the Hudson – I like the grey sky with just a hint of definition in the clouds. I like the longer focal length for this shot so I can appreciate the buildings and the bridge in the background.

hkbenjiTokyo, Feb 2020 - The highly detailed textures make for a busy image, but you’ve captured a moment of simplicity. It all comes together very nicely.

jvowild and wooly – Excellent smooth gradation in the marble and good tonal separation in the fleecy clouds. Did you use a yellow or orange filter? Really nice that you could spend some time printing with your graddaughters.

OxleyroadMoss – Interesting use of selective focus for a nature scene; I think it works well here.

Luis F. SosaWhite Fence – I don’t know the first thing about printing digitally, but I am quite fond of the matte texture for this image. It seems like the texture of an old painted board.

BSPThe Lake runner – The pools make really interesting patterns. I’m quite fond of the black border you made. Since it’s a bit crooked, I feel like I’m looking out an old window.

mfohlChan Turner’s Barbershop – Nice angle to feature the quintessential barbershop sign and the interesting shape of the building. You’ve captured the small town vibe nicely.

drpsilverGooseberry Falls, MN – Magical, indeed! The image is printed very nicely with sparkling white foamy highlights and rich dark shadows. Thanks for sharing!

calphotographyNiece Riding Scooter – Truly delightful! You’ve perfectly captured the energy of a child. Such fantastic smoothness and lack of grain. A real winner!

LucidTo Osa’s Island – The toning and style make this image feel timeless. The birds are a great additing. I keep wondering what is under the water, or perhaps it’s just sunlight?

MattiSDrei Annen Hohne Station – A very classic postcard feel. I love how the fog fades the trees in the distance.

Black DogFugitive light, Glasgow #1 – Interesting mottled texture. I would love to visit Glasgow some day. BTW, I love your handwriting, Jake. Some people just have inherently cheerful handwriting, and it’s just very nice to read.

Howard EarlBarber Shop NYC – Very nice of the gentleman to pose for you. I like how you balanced the storefront and the interior – it tells the story very effectively.

hwv3 cubes, 3 lines, 1 arc - Excellent angle and framing. The print is superb – the high contrast makes the strong geometric shapes pop while at the same time retaining enough detail to emphasize the grungy texture of the cement.

fatsoNorthern Exile - Merry Apocalypse to you as well! I have no experience printing digitally, but I think you’ve done a fantastic job with this card. I’m extremely impressed with the gradation in the sky. The verso is nicely laid out as well. This really does look like the end of the world, complete with fog fading out into the distance. The panoramic aspect ratio paired with what seems to be a longish focal length makes for an immersive view.

kingbuzzieItenerant Cemetery East Austin – The texture of the peeling paint comes through well. I sometimes wonder if it wouldn’t be better if all headstones weren’t made out of wood.

DarinWCCraggy Rocks, Sacramento – The direct sunlight provides some shadows which accentuate the jagged form of the rock. I quite enjoyed reading the accompanying letter. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the appreciation! I took the picture in the Gallery of Modern Art; the light was coming through some stained glass windows, which gave the image that look. You'll find plenty to interest you in Glasgow- the viewing platform at The Lighthouse gives you spectacular views over the city and beyond on a clear day. Be warned though...you can get all 4 seasons in the space of a few minutes. I was once treated to a hailstorm and sunshine at the same time and that was in May!

What a great start to the day!

I just received @Laurent 's postcard for this round.
It only took two days to reach me.
The post service between France and The Netherlands seems back on track.

This one screams TONE to me.
Love it!

Merci beaucoup!

I have finally had the mental "bandwidth" to think about something other than COVID-19 and its ramifications for the world as we know it.

The card from Black Dog is a wonderful portrait that shares the joy of being in nature. The unsharp arms and hands focuses the viewer on the person's face. Well done.
"2 Linemen" from mike c is a portrait of a very different kind. I like how you used the post and sun to create a silhouette for the linemen.
"Tugboat on the Hudson" from Rowreidr is a nice example of a "hybrid workflow". A very nice image well printed with very cool tones. The metallic paper makes the image sparkle.
The panorama from fatso immediately reminded me of Jerry Uelsmann. It is hard to believe that this is a single negative. This region of Canada must be a cool (in more than one way) place to photograph. The paper you selected fits the image very well. My copy survived the postal system quite well.

Thank you to all for a wonderful selection of images.

Regards,
Darwin

@mike c - Your postcard arrived over the weekend. A very nice silhouette with good composition.

@Rowreidr - Thank you for your card. The thick cloud cover makes it feel like the image was taken on the Thames.

@iandvaag - You've got a keen eye. It's actually a road traffic sign that was thrown into the river.

@Laurent - I received your postcard today. I really like the quality of the clouds and the general composition of the image. Funny enough, that bridge is just around the corner from where I work under 'normal' conditions!

Thanks-my niece has been a great model over the years. This was taken at one of our favourite beaches on the Normandy coast, where I've found many a good image over the years. There'll be more to come in future exchanges!
Also another 2 cars arrived today:
2 Lineman by Mike Clark- Moody and graphic; the cloud and tree in the bottom right corner work well to balance out the rest of the elements.
Street Scene with moody sky by Laurent-I always enjoy this kind of scene, especially the Surrealistic qualities of the various objects within it and the lighting.

I just received @mooseontheloose Rachelle's capture in Hanoi of a streetside barbershop in operation.

A lovely addition to my collection, well composed, developed and printed. Thank you. The postcard survived the trip from Kyoto to Vlissingen in allmost pristine condition too!

I am guessing your Rolleiflex has a standard lens (75mm-ish) and was wondering if the barber heard your click?

I just love square prints on postcards. I might just break-out my Mamiya C220 for the next postcard exchange.

Stay safe but stay alive too!

Kind regards,

Bill @BSP

Thanks Bill, but it was a very delayed card for Round 48. However, I'm happy to hear it got out of Japan and delivered! (I was a bit worried for a while).
The Rolleiflex is old and has the standard 75mm lens and is super quiet. I was able to take a couple of shots without disturbing the barber or his customer. Unfortunately I was so worried about being quick about it the other frames aren't as sharp as I would like them to be due to focus errors. This one turned out the best of of the bunch.

I just received hkbenji"s card. Says it was from Japan, but it has Hong Kong stamps. Cool. It's from somewhere east. Anyway, it's a nice scene with a striped crosswalk marker that contrasts with a building pattern. And the building apparently has some reflected light play on it. Nice! Thanks Benji!

During the last week I received three more postcards:

mike c "2 Linemen": A beautiful backlit shot. Very nice image composition! The trees and the cloud in the lower right corner give that little bit extra and together with the sun they emphasize the height in which the linemen work. I also love the fact that the coat of the lower construction worker shows a slight tonality.

Hkbenji "Tokyo, Feb 2020": Another beautiful postcard. I love the perspectives, which are diagonal with the crosswalk and vertical with the skyscrapers. With the skyscrapers, you can imagine that they are infinitely high. The people and the vehicle shown are very pleasantly distributed in the picture.

Laurent: Merci beaucoup pour ta très belle carte postale. I like the contrast and exposure very much. And there are also many interesting perspectives that run in different directions. That gives the picture, although the main subject is static, together with the pedestrian, a very interesting dynamics.

@bedrof - Yesterday I received your lovely card in the post. A well structured image with good tones, especially on the pillar. The back of the card was just as enjoyable. Great notes and stamps!

I also received Laurent's nice card. A city scene (somewhere in France?) with a 20 km/hr speed limit sign and pedestrian. Nice building, nice card.
