I recently acquired a beautiful Nikon F4 for a bargain price as it had a slightly damaged DP-20 Finder. Compared to the way the Finders on the F3 and the F2 connect to the bodies, the F4 clearly lacks in this with just a single small locking mechanism. Either through wear or a bad knock, the alloy on the Finder locking rail gets damaged and this allows the Finder to move slightly back off the body. Then the electrical connections become faulty and what I was seeing was in the top left window...

Thanks for your post, I really thought my camera had something broken. I have adapted your solution to my F4, only that I did it with a 3D printed model. I posted it on thingiverse and if you do not mind I quoted and linked your post. Thanks again.
