@Patrick Robert James thank you for the compliment. I think I wiped too much ink off in the highlights, but overall I thought this was much better than I had any right to expect for a first print.

@fgorga you err by assuming I have room for a press or two. In fact, I have an extremely cluttered living room but living on my own I can get away with it. If I hit the Trifecta, I'm building me a studio.

@Dwayne Martin I loved those windows. They're everywhere in Florida, and yet nonexistent here in North Carolina. It never occurred to me that they might be a quirk of Florida architecture.

I’m from Fl so I grew up with those things. Never occurred to me other state’s didn’t have them. They really never worked very well, or sealed completely. You can tell your windows don’t close well when a 6 inch lizard can come in at will.

Back to the print, I‘m always fascinated that you can make a print of that quality by inking a plate……

You can tell your windows don’t close well when a 6 inch lizard can come in at will.

When I was exiled to Boca Raton, we had a home with a larger pool inside a vaulted screen enclosure, completely sealed off from the wilds beyond. So imagine my surprise one morning when I found a three-foot-long iguana swmming lazily along the bottom. I have no earthly idea how she managed to enter.

Been working on converting my alt photo workflow to a calibrated MAC/Quadtone Rip/QCDN system. finally making some headway - a print on Fabriano Artistico Hot Press, acidified, classic cyanotype. I have printed this before with a simple curve and Photo black only neg. I have to agree this one looks better, although it looks like I need to clean up some luminance noise in the sky.

I finally printed a gravure on the Polymetaal press I found last autumn. I'm not sure why I procrastinated -- it was much easier than I had imagined. I am at the bottom of this learning curve and yet the gravure I made is on a par with my kallitype (in my Photrio media if you want to compare) of the same image.

On the theory that the right number of presses is always one more* than you currently own: I saw a really gorgeous Rembrandt Pelican press for sale locally as I was heading out the door to my daughter's wedding, for a small fraction of its replacement cost. So tomorrow I'm picking up the Rembrandt and moving it in.

Without going too far into the weeds...Direct to plate? Aquatint screen + image exposure? Purchased, borrowed, or hard fought personally figured out adjustment curve?

Nice print, @KYsailor! Looks like you have nailed the whole new workflow with new computer, OS, and all fairly well.

Thanks, the conversion to MacOS has been painful for a long time windows user....and with the use of a fairly precise, but not that absolutely accurate measurement device ( color muse) I discovered my UV box has a hot spot in the middle....resulting in more changes to my setup....

A few from a recent photogravure printing session.....need to flatten them out a bit. The MAC/QTR/QCDN system seems to work well for direct to plate photogravure as well as other alt photo processes

Really nice, I have put aside my Kallitype work for awhile, however this make me think I should get back to it.... I like the palladium toning. I generally use gold toning - it seems a bit less expensive, but given my limited skill I will stick with it until I get more proficient at Kallitype. Your work is always excellent !

Tom, it's great seeing your new work! We are running a new alt print exchange at the moment, and I wish you (and @KYsailor ) had been a part of it. I hope the spring is springing up in MN. :smile:

Maybe next time! Having some personal issues ( second knee replacement) and hopefully will be back at full strength soon. Ever get your new burner working - I have a lot of parts ordered and waiting to assemble all of them

Here is a cyanotype on Hosho. The paper is very difficult to work with. Just falls apart in the water...

You know, most people get excited when they can make an image appear on paper. A few of them will go on to perfect the process — produce the greatest range of tones and the acuity that the process permits. But it is the rare printer who gets the process down, AND has the sensibility to marry it to images in ways that enhance the work. I often think of cyanotype more as an introduction to alt processes than as a viable artistic medium in its own right. And when one does impress me, it’s usually because of the printer’s use of tannins to tone the print away from the blue. But you, Patrick, have twice now shown us cyanotypes that embrace the muted scale and blue tones to make unforgettable works. Hat’s off to you.
