Since it is highly likely that any camera or lens that I would want to buy is no longer made, it is likely that I will not be paying tariffs for any photographic equipment I purchase.

Tariffs are essentially duty, and they apply to used equipment as well.

Um, er, ah, SG may have to pay state and local sales tax on used equipment but what's already is in the US isn't subject to duty when purchased. That said, in theory taxing imported used photo gear when it enters the country may also raise the price of used photo gear that's already in the US. Whether the effect will be measurable is an interesting question.

Matt, in the US we don't have a federal sales tax like Canada's GST. In my native dialect of English tariff and duty are synonyms.

Only if imported, buying a used D4 from Japan will cost the additional 10%, not if bought from an American seller, but used gear price will go up as new becomes more expensive. So given 56% vs 10% do you settle for a Canon or Sony if your first choice was Nikon? Just to fair Panasonic is made in China not sure about Olympus. A Nikon Z9 goes from about $5500 to $8580, then a jump in lenses. A Sony A1 with 10% added will be $7100.

Technically, the tariff is the rule or set of rules which set out what the rates of duty are.
Tariffs often also specify other terms - e.g. import restrictions - as well as sometimes other taxes such as excise tax and excise duty.
So not surprisingly, when people throw around the term "tariff", they are meaning one thing, while using a term that actually means something else.
Something that photographers are fairly familiar with.

Paul, what Nikon products do you believe are made in Vietnam? As far as I am aware, most Nikon camera bodies are made in Thailand (which I don't think fared much better under Mad King Donald's tariff scheme…). I believe Nikon was making the low end DSLRs and maybe some point-and-shoots in China, but I think most/all of those have been discontinued now. They do make a lot of their lenses in China.

Nikon's are made in Thailand and not Vietnam. Most Sony are made in Thailand too. I heard that the A1ii is made in Japan but the A1 was made in Thailand also. Most Canon's are still made in Japan. It is OM digital camera that are made in Vietnam.
I asked B&H this morning and they said the Sony A1ii is made in Thailand too. So basically Nikon's and Sony's are made in Thailand. Canon except for the low end are made in Japan. Only OM got hit the heaviest since they are made in Vietnam.

Your right but Thailand also got hit with a larger than 10% tariff 37% . I don't why I got stuck on Vietnam.

But Sony's are made in Thailand too so there is no advantage switching from Nikon to Sony.

Yes most Canon cameras are still made in Japan. I must give credit to Canon for this as most Japanese camera manufacturers don't make their cameras in Japan any more or very few. As I have said Nikon and Sony make theirs in Thailand. Fuji and Panasonic make most of them in China. OM digital makes theirs in Vietnam. Pentax makes theirs in the Philipines. Sigma makes all theirs in Japan though.

I have older Sigma Favon models, the SD9 are on their last legs, the 10 is getting close, not sure how long the SD 15 will hold up. The current crop of Sigma with CMOS sensor have no appeal for me. Not sure if I would switch from Sony A mount to Sony E mount or Canon over price. The new 104% tariffs Olympus is off the table for sure.
