<sigh>

I think I'll just go shoot some photos and ignore the rest of the world for a while ...
After DT won the last US election, I didn't watch news on TV or search out anything online about the topic for over two months.

Think I'll join you and take another break after the upcoming Canadian election 👍👍

How does eBay know what the correct HS/Taric code is if the seller just puts "camera" on the box or if the seller gives them the wrong code?

As I think someone else responded ... eBay rely on the seller to give the correct HS/Taric code. I've always found this to work when the product is sourced from China, these sellers know what they are doing as their business depends on serving the international market without any hitch.

The problem sellers are invariably individuals in the US who seem to have no clue about international rules. I can understand this and do not blame these individuals, it's inevitable when the US is so isolated from international norms and behaviour. Right now a camera case being sent to me from Seattle has gone AWOL (almost certainly on its way back to the US right now) because the sender did not put a Taric code on the label ... the scary thing is that he posted it at a USPS post office and they did not alert him to this requirement!

it's not exactly the same. Film, paper & chemistry are produced in many countries. There are choices. Do you go to the gas station where the people are friendly, the bathrooms are clean and you can put air in your tires for free? ... or the rundown one that looks more like a crack house ?
I dont care what the place is like..friendly or unfriendly clean or dirty....
If I NEED petrol I buy.....and I try to buy cheap.....
(Anyway in the UK its self service at the pump! as for a bathroom? huh?🤣

I work for a British company (did before and after Brexit) and have shipped to/from the UK and I've never heard of Taric Codes. It's been a few years (6 years or so) since I shipped anything from the US to UK or EU though. Is this a new requirement? Would it also be known under a different term?

Trump has apparently backed down on the tariffs but ignored China. OH DEAR! You don't annoy a sleeping dragon.

My signature line applies directly to the likes of him.

A little history from the Canadian perspective.

We had a decades long free trade agreement with the US which DT renegotiated in his first term. This time around he has ripped up that deal claiming we are ripping the US off. It's his own deal that he's complaining about.

How can any country trust any agreement with a trading partner like that?

They can't. Companies around the world are finding new suppliers in more reliable countries right now. And governments are stepping up work to finalize trade deals with other countries. It should affect photographic products as well.

As I understand it EU Customs Tariff (TARIC) is using the Combined Nomenclature (which includes the Harmonized System).

My hunch is that the tariffs are a bargaining chip rather than a long-term strategy and that the photographic world will not be strongly impacted.

Thanks both. It has been close to 10 years since I shipped anything in a professional setting (ie for work), so I'm a bit foggy if I had to deal with this then. The last time I shipped anything at all to the UK was 6 years ago and that was a bunch of gifts for a coworker. I do recall filling out a customs declaration for that, but it was pretty straightforward.

There's been significant turmoil in photo supplies for the past 20 years. I think most of us who still use film have adjusted to the post-digital market by now.

This discussion is repeatedly veering too close to political matters, IMO. Please refrain from venturing into politics.

I agree, but that veering is moderator-approved, except when such approval is rolled back and the posts are deleted.

I’ll be taking some pictures today using pre-retaliatory tariff film and vintage analog camera. Yippee! Rejoice!!

In North America long road trips are common....often for photos
so it's not unusual to buy a coffee & use the facilities at gas stations...
at the moment many people in Canada are avoiding travel to and goods from the south....
Ilford is currently selling well....

Time will tell. At this exact moment they have curtailed a couple of my photographic plans as Im not ordering some “smalls” from China as can’t be certain of where it will ship from (past purchases have shipped from China or Kentucky) and whether the duty deminimis has been imposed, rescinded or delayed. It’s not a strong impact, personally, though. It might even be in the “chump change” category but Im the chump and it’s my change…

Anybody have a sense of what will happen to raw chemicals for those of us making our own developers, hand coating, etc?

This extraordinary tariff mess between the US and China may give Lucky a boost especially in their home market. I have no clear understanding of the film market in China, however this could help Lucky to displace Kodak amateur films. Yes??

I now live in New Jersey. It's the only state in the USA that does not allow patrons to pump their own gas. Other states either have pump your own only lines or pump your own or have an attendant do it it for higher cost per gallon. When I drive to other states and need gas, I;ve often pulled up to the pump and waited minutes for the attendant before remembering I have to pump it myself.
