I'm developing (pun intented) a huge admiration for the works of Ray Metzker. Anybody has Unknown Territory: Photographs by Ray Metzker? It's pretty expensive, so I want to make sure it's worth the price.
I don't have it but there's a complete flip-through of the book on YouTube:
Thanks. It has now entered my "books I'd like to have one day" list.
Another is Gary Stochl, On City Streets.
Coincidentally, Blake Andrews posted about this book on Instagram yesterday. Maybe you saw it.
Blake Andrews' IG Post
Saw his post, not on Facebook, but on Threads. I had heard of Metzker before, but Stochl was new to me.
I was getting some birthday stuff for my nephew yesterday, and the store had "American Geography" by Matt Black on the shelf, so I grabbed it.
American Geography
A powerful, compelling monograph that reveals the reality of the unseen and forgotten contemporary America.thamesandhudson.com
Great book.
Reminds me that I recently made a list of all the photo books in my bookshelfs that have the words "America" or "American" in it:
In the American West — Richard Avedon
American Geography — Matt Black
American Blood — Danny Lyon
American Photographs — Walker Evans
America and Other Myths — Robert Frank / Todd Webb
The Americans — Robert Frank
American Geography: Photographs of Land Use from 1840 to the Present
American Sports, 1970 — Tod Papageorge
American Prospects — Joel Sternfeld
Black in White America — Leonard Freed
American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams
I can't believe I don't have American Surfaces...
What are your thoughts regarding the Frank/Webb book?
I'm slacking I can only identify 2 that I own and 1 that I no longer own ("Tulsa")
My nine are:
Dawoud is blocking some, so there may be more
- John Gossage The Pond
- Danny Lyon The Bikeriders
- Henri Cartier-Bresson The Decisive Moment
- Bill Owens Suburbia
- Lee Friedlander Self Portrait
- Walker Evans American Photographs
- Robert Frank The Lines of My Hand
- Robert Adams Los Angeles Spring
- William Eggleston Guide
I've been longing for The Pond, but it's at such an absurdly high price on the used market that I'd have to sell a kidney to get it. Cheapest I've seen is 350$US, which makes it 490$ in Canadian dollars...
Definitely 3 separate titles, probably same publisher, same series. My 2 are correction, 3
The Decisive Moment
American Prospects
Los Angeles Spring (the new version)
What are the 3 books 2nd row up from bottom, right side of image, 2nd-4th books in from right side? 3 copies of same book with different dust jacket images?
