Would a "modern", good quality screwdriver set be JIS compatible?

Also... being member of an ISO committee and manufacturing to ISO specifications are two totally different things. One would hope there is a correlation but without a specific product conformity certification that would be merely an assumption or hope.

Hopefully this is not hijacking the thread, since it is a similar question, but I am having difficulty finding a flat head screwdriver that is sharp enough for older cameras such as the Ikontas. I bought the tiniest one I could find on Amazon, but it just would barely fit into the slot... it is almost like you need a razor sharp flat-head screwdriver. Does anyone have any recommendations for this?

Look on a watch supply site. They will have better screwdrivers with thinner blades. Or, home one of your blades thinner using a whetstone.

AgX... probably not if general interest or utility but because you seem to care so much... here’s some detailed info on screwdriver standardization:

the applicable iso technical committee is TC29 SC10

DIN, the German Standardation organization, is Secretariate

each member nation has 1 vote

JIS is not currently in TC29 SC10 as either Participant or Observer.

jIS does not currently have a Standardation category for fasteners or fastening devices that I could find. JIS B 4633:1998 appears to still be active and current, but when standards get past 5 years without update that usually means the committee vaporized for one reason or another.

interestingly, DIN has a standardization committee for sex toys... Which must make GER far more progressive than many other first-world countries.

At none of the german manufacturers catalogs (and I hint to those as these are many members even outside Germany who will find at those products at the racks) I find statemens of ISO specification. The jints at Japan are vague,
The use of the designation Philips already shows what variation there is.

What counts is the actual fit as best as one can establish. For real acute evaluation one must grind down screw heads and check under a microscope.

A few times wrongly used and all we talk about here is blah-blah anyway...

The OP's question is about compatibility, not about availability. It applies to any member in the world interested in screwdrivers.

Flat blades can be thinned with a few stroke on a sharpening stone. Keep the newly sharpened edge at the same angle as best you can.
You aren't going to need 1000 grit but it won't hurt, just a bit more elbow grease.

Wow... thanks. Looking forward to reading it. One of my favorite books was Petroski’s “The Pencil”. More people should learn about the history and engineering behind commonplace objects that often get taken for granted.

Concerning the "JIS" designation and it being unknown over here, I just checked the 2003 Euro catalog from Micro-Tools (who likely were/are the major supplierof camera-repair utensils. It got over 16 A4 pages on screwdrivers, and not one mentioning of "JIS"!
Only one model, made in Japan, is described as being specially formed and often fitting better than type Philips on camera screws. These ones however got a logo, that shows the classic Philips cross-cut, whereas as the Wiha ones, which made up the major part of their offer, got as logo the JIS cross-cut...
